Is this machine doubling or something else?

If this '69 S cent is an example of machine or ejection doubling why is the "1" doubled to the "north" and the other three digits doubled "east?" Wouldn't all digits in the date of a machine doubled coin be doubled in the same direction? Also, the mintmark appears to me to be doubled to the "west." Does anyone know how these seemingly inconsistent with each other doublings can happen when a coin is machine doubled?

“I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am. When two expeditions of scientists, financed by the Royal Academy, went forth to test my theory of relativity, I was convinced that their conclusions would tally with my hypothesis. I was not surprised when the eclipse of May 29, 1919, confirmed my intuitions. I would have been surprised if I had been wrong. I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein- quoted in Saturday Evening Post interview (1929)

Okay, machine doubling but why is the "1" doubled to the "north" and the other three digits doubled "east?" Wouldn't all digits in the date of a machine doubled coin be doubled in the same direction? Also, the mintmark appears to me to be doubled to the "west."

The apparent doubling is the result of machine or strike doubling. This can be determined due to the lack of split serifs in the numbers. Since the mintmarks were not part of the hub, but were placed individually into each die, the mintmark can be doubled with the die being doubled. It is interesting, however, that the strike doubling appears not to be in the same "direction".

The "S" on top is left or "west" of the underlying "S." Could my coin be machine doubled with a RPM?

That is certainly possible, but without a clear photo of the mintmark, I could not comment.

I'm going to attempt a closeup of the mintmark with my Coolpix. Back later with boomspeed willing. My Coolpix will be going to a place hitherto unknown.

Great pic, Murphy. Your date looks like mine. Mintmark does not.

Was unable to get suitable image of mintmark only on my '69 S. I have a few more of the '69 S with the machine doubling evident on some but not all digits of the date and "LIBERTY." It seems to me now that none of my coins have "direction" inconsistency since I took a closer look at them with my loupe last evening. I'm thinking the ejection doubling on my coin shown in this thread is all "northeast." The mintmark does not have to the "west" doubling now that I look at it closer. It does have doubling, looks kind of like a messed "3" with all those serifs mingling.

Thanks to all who posted images. I would suggest to Murphy, and this is only a suggestion, that you put "fake" or "altered" underneath your pic of 1914 D lincoln that shows up everytime you post. I've seen these on ebay offered as genuine and a new member of the forum with little or no experience in counterfeit detection might get the idea that your coin is genuine and subsequently purchase one that looks similar thinking he or she has gotten ahold of a real one.
