This is the original thread concerning the raw toned ebay Morgan Dollars that came from an original bag that toneddollars has just described seeing in person in another thread.

OK, a 63* was given on what coin, the one that sold for $1450? Do you think it has a reasonable expectation to realize that much at auction or in the market right now?
It's nice that the toning was validated by NGC, but at MS63* the coin is worth nowhere near the $1475 purchase price. I don't care what the toned Morgan dealers claim.

That was my exact point when this thread was fresh. OK, it's NT according to NGC, but I can't find one NGC 63* in the Heritage archives that sold for this much (toned common dates).

I'll believe it when I see it change hands at auction.

Maybe. But, I've sold a lot of toned Morgans, many of which were lower graded common date NGC star coins. Some of which were very pretty. None of which ever brought anywhere near that kind of money. However, that's eBay. Might be a different result in something like a Heritage auction.
Eric , your original gripe about the coin was that it was AT, now you are changing direction and questioning the price in relationship to the grade. The coin is worth what some one is willing to pay for it. Obviouly after seeing your coins you would not pay this kind of money for that type of coin.

No, my gripe was that there is no way I would bid that kind of money on a raw toner on eBay, due to the fact that it very well could be AT. And I'm not convince this isn't a "market acceptable" grading.
This business of a coin is worth what someone is willing to pay is nonsense. Show me one NGC 63* common date that has realized $1450 at a real auction.
As far as seeing my coins, you have seen but a fraction of them, and most of my low dollar stuff. I got out of the real high end stuff about four years ago when I saw this nonsense coming. Perhaps I should pull out some pictures of the coins I consigned four years ago to Heritage.
Toneddollar, you picked up a beauty today. When will these youngsters learn that you can only learn something when you are listening. When you are talking, everything that you hear, you already know!
Yeah I know, all the coins owned/being sold by the toned cartel are "A color", and anything else anyone else has is "B color". The hype and PR on this board is becoming old.
Edited to add: I'm still waiting for someone to show me a common NGC 63* that has realized $1450.
I must have missed this thread originally, but let me state for the record................in my un-un-un-expert opinion....the coin is AT, market acceptable, but AT.
How do I know that for sure............frankly I don't, hence the statement that it's an opinion. NGC gave their's, and I can't argue the fact that the felt confident enough with the color to holder it, but $1450...............I'd like to see it sell for that again.
If the owner is happy that's all that really matters here, I just like to ponder what I could have bought for $1450
Have to agree with you Toned Dollars. This thread was 100% about why the coin was NT and had absolutely nothing to do with what it was worth. Eric was adamant it would not slab out. Most everyone else who responded disagreed. It looks Eric was proven to be wrong as it did slab. That was the issue. Interesting thread.
Initially, I thought the thread was a goof on the guy who won the coin at $1475. A raw one no less with a less than excellent photo. As it turns out it was hotly contested by toning experts. I'm with Andy on that account. I would have bid $25. But I'm no toned dollar expert either.
Read the title of this thread. And read all my posts, not just the first one about the questionable toning. I still suspect this falls under "market acceptable". The bottom line is someone paid $1475 for a raw toner on eBay that is now in a NGC 63* holder, and as far as I can tell from three different auction archives, no common 63* has realized a price anywhere near that figure.
Kick ass coin, and 100% NT as I said when I 1st saw it raw. A "no brainer" if you will.
If you wanna sell @ $1,475 I'm a buyer. PM me anytime. I doubt you're selling, as a coin of that magnitude regardless of grade will not soon be replaced! Congrats!
I would pay $1,500+ for this coin - holdered or not. The reverse toner in 66* absolutely makes the investment a profitable one, as well as two monster additions to an already awesome collection!

This is going to be my last post on this thread, I'm not really interested in another long protracted flame war.
The bottom line is the market for toned Morgans has become insane, even moreso than the prices for CC material. This is a house of cards that has been built up by those promoting them. $1475 for this coin is insane. Look at any major auction, you will see from a few dozen to over one hundred toned coins, many of which have great color. Toned Morgans, even with fantastic color, are not rare, or even scarce regardless of what some people want collectors to believe. Now we even have one of these people supposedly offering $1450 for it, even though I can find no common NGC MS63* that has sold for over $1000. By just applying a little common sense, one should come to the correct conclusion.
And again I will say I believe this coin was holdered as market acceptable.

Eric,
You are too much!
Would it be so hard to just say you were wrong? You are now just looking silly. I do seem to remember you jumping on my back when I disagreed with an ANACS AT net grade coin....another coin that you have never seen or held.
Now you disagree with an NGC coin by saying its market acceptable. I used those same words in another thread.....hmmmmmm. Folks, go back and re-read the first 3 pages of this post were Eric categorically says this coin is artificially toned and goes on to call others who disagree with him with insults. Who cares what the coin cost, as that was not your intent or your statements.

I can see the point that Eric is trying to make. I think it is good at least to know that there really are several different markets out there. There are the auction houses (which bring a collector some good values) and then there are the dealers and brokers of those coins.
It is good to see both sides of the toned issue. A lot of toned Morgans bring a big premium. Obviously people are willing to pay that...which is fine...as long as they realize the market may not always bring those some prices.
If the collector is happy with his or her purchase then I guess that is what matters in the end. If they are buying coins as an investment...well that is another story.
So, all knowing Eric, what's wrong with this coin. TRY to use facts instead of your personal opinion......given your 27 years of experience. I am curious. >>

Now after the "AT'ed POS" has come back from NGC with a MS-63* grade Eric wants to claim otherwise. The quotes above are all from K6AZ's posts.
Seems he is confused about his opinions from the beginning of this thread. Convenient memory?
Surprised that it only made a 63, not that it was holdered. Congrats on a beautiful coin, Mike!
I got out of the real high end stuff about four years ago when I saw this nonsense coming. You sold off all your really nice toners just before the market boomed? Sure doesn't lend a lot of credibility to your market forcasts.............
The bottom line is the market for toned Morgans has become insane, even moreso than the prices for CC material. This is a house of cards that has been built up by those promoting them. $1475 for this coin is insane. Same logic as 4 years ago? Look, what goes up, must come down. Are we riding a bubble now, or is the market still correcting itself for the severely deflated prices we enjoyed just a short time ago. Nobody can answer that question, only time will tell.
And again I will say I believe this coin was holdered as market acceptable. No. It was holdered as ms63*.
Beautiful coin still. Now that its holdered i hope some folks are now in the belief that the coin is still NT.As for what its worth, whatever someone is willing to pay for it!Congrats Mike.
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
That coin if it were in an NGC or PCGS 65 or better holder would be worth 2K to me maybe more, based upon the pics.
Green is not a common color in the quantities seen on that coin. It looks totally original to me. Notice how the magenta hides in the recesses of the hair? Looks totally authentic.
Chances are though, it will not grade out as a 65 based upon just raw data. Take a look at the books.....isn't 64 the most common grade by quite a margin?
" What amazes me is the alarmingly large numbers of toned coins, not just dollars, that are available for collectors to buy these days. Mint bag toning took decades to develop on some of the coins in a mint bag. Many, many uncirculated silver dollars were melted down and not replaced with "new" dollars. By some estimates, half of all Morgan dollars ever made were lost in the melting pots over the years. A naturally toned dollar that managed to keep its colors into the '60's often then went kicking and screaming into some kind of dip to make it bright again. A toned coin was widely considered "tarnished" by newbies of the day. There's something wrong with the math as one peruses ebay and looks at rainbow after rainbow after rainbow. Just my opinion."
I think it's like a land rush. Awesomely toned Morgans are out there, 20 years ago they were about 2x a normal coin or less and now who knows where they're gonna end up? They keep trading hands so people can take profits. Most of them, though are not monsters. True monster toned morgans are not as common as you might think. At least what I call monsters.
Year after year, they keep going up. I have almost stopped listing them because I go back and see what I paid for them 3 or 4 years ago and I don't want to sell those coins for a fair mark up because you can't replace them for what I paid for them.
I'm just basically hanging on to the toned Morgans I have. I'll probably ask Brandon to list them eventually if we get to them. The scenario will be that I will list them, people will complain about the high prices, more will slowly trickle in, the best will slowly get sold (I'll keep seeing them posted as brag coins here on the forum), my "inventory" of them will increase and I'll be happy. Maybe one day I'll have the third nicest group right behind GSAguys first and second collections.
(Monster toned Morgans are one of my very favorite areas. Imagine an extremely well done 20lb coffee table book with awesome photos and stories? I'd pay major bucks to have that. Maybe GSAguy and the rest of us could work together to do a book. I would like that. We wouldn't make any money but we would have some fun! Imagine having one of your coins in the book. That would be cool.)
