In case you missed it - mylar flips can injure your coins

On the home page of PCGS there is or was a write up about this. If you slide the coin in, it increases the risk of hairlines on the face of the coin - a good reason not to breakout high end coins, especially proofs to re-submit them. (They typically are slid rather than dropped into a mylar flip.)

    I've never liked flips.

If you flatten the staples the old fashioned cardboard window holders provide better protection as a cheap holder.

    I like the cardboard flips.
  • Airtites are better than flips or cardboard... a little more expensive, but much better!

Yes, I agree they (two by twos) are very safe especially when you take a pin to break the plastic and then get the coin out (don't remove the staples to unfold the two by two to free the coin.)

Problem though for two by twos when submitting coins - you can't use them.....PCGS and NGC require coins to be put into flips when they are submitted.

No. The write up was about how PVC flips can hurt your coins. Microscopic analysis showed that PVC (soft) flips had more contaminants and particles than non-PVC safe flips (mylar).

Mylar flips are much safer than PVC flips and staple 2X2 holders.

The staple type of holders have an ultra thin mylar window. While the mylar is inert, it is too thin to offer much protection. This is especially true for half dollars and silver dollars, which are actually thicker than the width of the 2X2 holder. Dealers put these coins in a single roll box, face to back. If you look at the coins as they are sitting in the box, you quickly realize that the coins are rubbing against each other. The 2X2 staple flips are great for half dimes, dimes, and smaller thickness coins, assuming that they are placed in the appropriate window-sized holder.

I use a heat sealer to prevent the coins from sliding around in the Saflip 2X2 holders. This puts the coins in a completely inert environment, that is virtually air tight and the coins are held stationary.

Except that as they age they start getting brittle so the edges tend to split and the coins fall out. I've dropped many a coin because the mylar flip split. You want horror, imagine taking a half dollar sized coin and dropping it into a mylar flip only to have the bottom seam split and the coin drop right on through.

I should have stated that there are a few different brands of mylar flips. Saflip brand holders by ET Cointain are the only flips to use. They are less brittle, yet offer the inert material advantage over pvc flips.

Commonsense also helps. For example, I hate it when some people will look at a coin that you have and they just twist and bend and wring and twist and bend your holder as if they are trying to get a closer look. When the hand the coin back to you, it is in a damaged flip. I replace flips often so that the coins are in fresh holders without any creases or problems.

Yes, and amazingly most dealers do not know this......or they just don't care. Talk about a pet peeve!

So far as holders go, I found Eagle holders and albums to be best. That's now houses my token collection.

Eagle holders are fantastic holders for coin storage. Probably the best available. We used to use Eagle holders for our inventory, but I stopped using them for inventory because the thin coins slide around. Nothing you can really do to stop this problem, although I have experimented with some custom inserts. I have talked with the owner of the company about the problem, but there's not much you can do. It's only a problem if you are transporting the collection to and fro. Eagle holders work well for everything else.
