Opinions on this 1853 Arrows and Rays seated liberty

I'm toying with the idea of starting a type set, haven't bought the dansco yet but am trying to get a few coins together, buying coins I can afford and hopefully at a later date upgrade.

Came across this specimen, please chime in and tell me the good, the bad and the ugly and what the coin is worth in this grade.

Herb, looks like a lightly cleaned and retoned coin to me. As far as grade, high end VF, pehaps low XF.
  • Looks cleaned to me. I have one that looks somewhat the same and I believe it's cleaned.

    VF30, cleaned & retoned. Avoid.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • VF and cleaned, but that's just an opinion......

  • thanx guys.

I'll take Dog97s advice and pass on this coin, actually once Eric chimed in I pretty well knew that I would pass on the coin.

EF-40 sharpness, harshly cleaned to an unnatural pasty white, which most collectors find undesirable. Neither PCGS nor NGC would grade this coin. I think that ANACS would net grade it to VF-25 or 30.

Having said that, the coin is OK if you are doing an economy type set. With coins like this you get a lot of “meat” (detail), and you should be able to buy them cheap IF the dealer treats you fairly. Lower grade uncleaned “original” coins would not show this much detail.

The downside is that coins like this don’t appreciate much in value. You will probably lose money them when it comes time to sell unless you keep them for a very long time.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
