In what series do you consistently see expensive, high grade, really ugly coins?

I realize that expensive is a relative term. Let's use $2,500. Re grades, let's say MS 65 and better.

I'd say Barber Halves, followed closely by Seated $s and Trade $s

In terms of generally hideous coins, I'd probably go with Bust $s, because most of them have had more chemicals applied to them than most women have had applied to their hair.

I'm being particular nasty tonight. I'll end this on a positive thought. I can't say enough positive things about attractive Unc. Classic Large or Half Cents. I have a beautiful example of the latter (Shylock is in love with the coin). I hope to acquire on of the former.

    Ike dollars and Franklin halves.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • In light of a previous post, I have to say Peace dollars. 65/66/67 graded coins with weak strikes are unacceptable to me, even if they are typical of the series.

Although you don't many of them, period, I'd say that there are a lot of unattractive, Mint State Reeded Edge half dollars around. I've seen very few that had attractive original mint luster. The Mint State examples have either been dipped to a dull gray or the original examples are covered with dark toning and very little luster.

I've seen a couple of MS-66 graded pieces that had a noticable mark or two in the field. There is no way that I could ever call a coin like that MS-66.

IHC's - most of the nice ones have been put away, the ugly ones keep circulating.

In the last 30 years, I can count on one hand the number of non-proof seated and trade dollars that had any decent level of eye appeal. And, those MS66+ coins sold for astronomical prices. Most seated dollar proofs are really ugly as well, with dark dull toning. Every once in awhile I do come across a nice proof trade dollar, although I've never purchased one.

Even though I really dig the Barber halves, I have seen some really ugly coins in the MS65 and even 66 range....really ugly!

Going in reverse, it seems that with the plenitude of Morgan silver dollars, for the price you can find some fantastic and beautiful MS coins. Ditto for the late date Walkers and Standing Liberty quarters. Gold of all series from about MS64 and higher is usually a wonder to behold.

My vote goes for the Barber halves, followed by the Bust halves, then the Seated halves.

My vote goes to Franklin halves...sorry Lucy.

Regardless of how many collectors love heavily toned Franklins, the worst toning I've ever seen on a silver coin was on this half dollar. ( Hands down ) .

Then again, I have seen quite a few toned Franklins that were absolutely beautiful. Personally, I like creamy white toning with very slight edge/rim toning. My collection of these coins is Proof 67-68 Cam and Deep Cam's...yes, they are all black & white.

Bust dollars, Seated dollars and Franklin halves. There are very nice ones out there, but majority AU or higher grades are ugly, IMO.
