TIME FOR EVERYONE TO VENT..... WHAT'S YOUR PET PEEVE IN COIN COLLECTING?

  • My pet peave, DEALERS! They sure gripe a lot. With everyone having their own specialty or not, they should all be making money hand over fist, but only the lucky, the most informed and the very intelligent are eating their piece of the pie. The rest are eating sour grapes I guess. I dunno, I'm not a dealer.

Anaconda, I like your style in some ways, but you seem a little pushy in pointing out what a collector/dealer should specialize in. Moderns or not...shower caps or not. I should think even a shower cap or two have been "dipped". lol

Then you had beter get off these boards--a vicious group predominates!

My pet peeve is a dealer who describes coins over the phone and tells you how wonderful they are, and then ships a bunch of crap. Had this happend to me recently on a proof set, and it seems the dealer forgot to mention little things like a diagonal scratch across the cheek of a Morgan dollar.

I'm going to have to agree with Laura on this one. Wannabe dealers who think it is their god given right to make 100%+ profit on everything. You know the ones, they want to pay 10-20% back of bid for PQ semi-key Morgans, calling them "low end for the grade". When they get the coins, they are "undergraded" and priced at 20-30% over ask.

What's really, really sad is when a young numismatist comes to a coin show with dad and the dealer makes a snide remark to son or daughter like, "You collect THOSE?"

"Yeah, he (or she) does collect those. Do you collect pizza crusts?"

There are some dealers like that at shows. The last show I attended was in Charlotte last year. One dealer, (and I can't remember his name for the life of me) spent a considerable amount of time with a YN telling him all about coins. I like to see dealers do that, tells you they really care about the future of the hobby.

I feel like saying it again.........

1- Hypocrites, two-faced people that are so in love with themselves that they forget what LIFE is truly about..... 2- Phonies, people that put on airs and seem to forget that we all perform the same bodily funtions and that just because they may own superior coins does NOT make them superior people. 3- Greed and Pride... catering to one's own ego in a negative sense (compromising one's own standards) TODAY, over something that in the end will mean NOTHING. 4- Bullies... greedy, self serving, two faced Bullies that think their ____ doesn't stink.

  • Eric, was that dealer a large-clientele type dealer or a smaller one?

    Proof set? Morgan dollar?

What's the date of the proof set?

  • My pet peeve:

    PVC flips.

They are good for absolutely NOTHING, yet they still make them and people (mostly dealers) still buy them. I have been asking dealers lately as to why they put their coins in poisonous flips. They predominant answer is "they are cheaper than non-pvc flips". Dealers, for the most part, are some of the cheapest people on earth. The ones who continue to use pvc flips care less about preserving coins for future generations and more about making the biggest profit possible. What especially pisses me off is when you see a $5,000 coin in a pvc flip. I will never understand that one. Oh, and let's not forget about auction companies that still use pvc flips for no good reason. They say that "this is a temporary flip and you should remove the coin after the auction", but the coin still picks up pvc residue, even if it is only in the flip for a few days.

Thanks a lot. Now I am in a bad mood. image

I only use ET Cointainer brand Saflips. They are more expensive, but only by $0.02 or so more per flip.

That happened to my daughter at her first show. A nice dealer saw how excited she was upon finding a 1912 Canadian $5.00 gold in a condition she could afford. He also knocked the price down a bit for her.
As we were standing looking at coins from another dealer, he inquired as to what she had in her hand. After seeing what it was, he shrugged and said, "Someone has to collect that stuff, I guess."

I really had to restrain myself.

Okay, I finally thought of one. I hope it has not been mentioned.

Sellers who list coins for sale on the BST board with the thread title like:

    "1884-CC PCGS MS-64 for sale"

With no mention of the denomination. I have learned that this almost always is a Morgan dollar for sale, but it still bothers me. image

Neil, I'm actually speaking of several who operate that way. They have made me lowball offers when I have been selling, but needless to say they have never bought any of my coins because I won't sell a key or semi-key Morgan back of bid.
  • People that are to lazy to do the work themselves, and are always asking for someone to do it for them.

One thing that gets on my nerves is when dealers on ebay are selling bright white, scrubbed/dipped to hell bust halves, and have the nerve to not speak of the cleaning, call the freakin' thing "original", or boast about the wonderful "light" "original" toning (that's been slowly splotching on during the last six months since it was last cleaned). Inexcusable!!
I also liked Jadecoin's comment about the pvc flips- I also can't understand why anyone with a brain would continue to use those things, even if they think it's for a short time.....

AT A COIN SHOW, DON'T LAY ALL YOUR CRAP ON THE DEALERS CASE SO THAT NO ONE ELSE CAN SEE ANYTHING WHILE YOU B.S. WITH HIM FOR 45 MINUTES!

Boy, their sure is a lot of angst out there.

My only concern is what to feed my pet peeve.

The little sucker could just eat all day long.image

As for dealers, there are a lot of really good ones out there
as well as a lot of ignorant, dishonest and obnoxious ones.

As for collectors, there are a lot of good, honest, fair and pleasant
ones out there looking for the good dealers. Then there are a lot of
proudly ignorant ones ,who don't pay on time, are unreasonable, expect
much more for much less and are obnoxious in general.

As for elitism, perhaps it is more of a sense of envy at the success of
some in the business. If one knows their business, deals fairly with people
and deals mainly in high priced coins, whether they are elitists or not is not
as important as how they treat me personally.

As for liars, cheaters, chislers and arrogant SOBs, the world is filled with them.
Every hobby, business, association and one might even find them in Government.

My pet peeves are people that complain about people hanging out at dealers tables,
spreading their papers & stuff all over the cases & not letting anyone in to see & they
YELL about it,,,then they complain about it 5 1/2 years later,,,GEEZ, give it a rest!! image

Another one is how so many members on this forum can have pet peeves, holler &
get everybody riled up, then leave the forum and are never seen again!!

Another one is how a certain dealer with a name like a serpent gets everybody mad about
pet peeves then runs off to Bolivia, or Uruguay, or Chitzin Itza or someplace with a bunch of
teenage girls and leaves all of us fightin' each other for years after.

    So there!!!

My pet peeve concerning coin collecting has to do with the companies that colorize / gold and platinum plate perfectly good coins and sell them as keepsake treasures to unsuspecting people. The State Quarters are often victimized here. I'll never forget the look on one close friend's face when I broke the news to him that the coins he had been collecting for years were of no interest to actual coin collectors. He had paid premium prices for his set and I told him I considered the coins vandalized. Experiences like this turn people off to coin collecting in general. A while later, he retired from our place of employment and I gave him a Marine Corps Dollar and Stamp Set to put him on the right track. HM

After all this time on the boards, and collecting, I have 2 pet peeves now.....

    1) The egos. Too many have to be right, no matter what. They think they know everything (most of the time they don't) and think they are God's gift to whatever part of numismatics they are looking at, at the moment.
    2) The negativity. Some posters on this board only seem to post when they can be negative or attack someone. Yet, they keep coming back to the board. Too bad their life must suck so bad that being negative on an internet board for coins is their day's highlight.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    SLAB PREJUDICE

Yeah Uh Huh. You know Exactly what I mean. If the NAACP could do its work with slabbed coins....all COINS would be judged on their own merit NOT on the color of their slabs.

what burns my butt outside of a flame this high is a dealer who has the same overpriced stuff show after show after show. get over it and move on
  • getting all hyped up about a new "discovery error" (lp2 cents anyone?), thinking I will finally get in on the "bonanza", and purchased umpteen
boxes for searching....found hundreds of "rare" examples.....only to find out that nobody cares....not the TPG's, few on this forum, and none of the major publications even acknowledge them (redbook?)

what really burns me is that I missed the gravy train on the 2008/2007 reverse silver eagles....WHY??????????????????

ok...done with my rant....back to your regularly scheduled programming.....

oh, wait, no I'm not.....I also hate posting a new subject (see today's "new find in Egypt") that I think is "extremely interesting and relevant" and getting little or no response...
    ok, now I'm done...

Dealers that describe and price their PCGS Genuine coins like it was the assigned grade THEY think PCGS should have graded it.

Listings or descriptions of graded coins that have questions after each grade:

    1858 50c PCGS XF-45 (50?)
1921 Peace NGC MS-64 (upgrade candidate???)
    1940-D *OGH* 25c PCGS MS-66 (67? 68 maybe? upgrade potential - OGH - who knows???????)
