As far as strike quality goes, what are the best years for WLH's?

If you were going to buy one for a type piece?

I went for a 1943; a common date, but you can get a stunner for a generic price.

I agree that P mints from the 40's are prime targets ... however as an alternative the 34p, 35p and 38p usually exhibit excellent strikes. Personally, I like the 38p out of those three the best. JMHO

If you go with the 40's stay far far away from the S Mint...the strikes suck monkey balls
  • 41 P is a likely suspect

The 41s is a pos for the most part,i have a 66 in a 64 holder because of the strike !

  • You are certainly correct about the 1940's S mint Walkers. Very weak strike. If you want an S mint in your type set, go with the 33-S. Very well struck, even in the lower MS grades. Also, if you want to see a sight Walker collectors rarely see, check out the new 1941-S Walker on Pinnacle's site, the one with no description yet. The hand/thumb on that coin is phenomenal for a 41-S, at least from what I can see on the photo. They often have minimal thumb separation, even in MS-66.

I like the 1939 and 1939-D. 1936 and 1940 are often above average. There are some dates from the 1940's, but the 65 price for a 39 or even a 36 is not that much more. Think out of the box.
