Just thought that I would share my latest purchase that arrived this weekend. It's an 1856 $3 gold piece. What do you think...opinions, grade opinions, comments? Although 1856 is a slightly better date (mintage of 26,010) compared to the more "common" 1854 or 1878 (138,618 and 82,304), there really is only a small premium in price, so even though I'm putting together a type set, I was pleased to get this date. The coin looks even better "in hand" than the pictures show.
By the way, I purchased this coin from fellow board member Bill Jones and would give him my highest recommendation for anyone looking for a dealer. Bill always seems as interested in sharing his numismatic knowledge as he is in making a sale. Plus, he has a great eye for quality coins. All in all, an A+ dealer.

I'll say 53.
[EDIT to add: Nice date to pick, by the way. I don't want to pay much more than "common type coin" prices for most of my coins, but when I can get something many times scarcer for a relatively small bump in cost, I'm all over that.]
I recently purchased one also:
I'd say that one scratch under the chin put it at an AU-55
The $3 princess is a cool coin

It appears that the New Orleans $3 circulated more, does not exist in PCGS mint state, and sells for a significant premium to the 1856, even in lower grade.
Both of y'all's coins look better than the one on my hat, which is the only one I've ever owned.
YUCK!

She's scary, but I like her. Still cost me $160 or so as-is, making it my most expensive holey to date.
But hey... it's a three-dollar gold piece.
That in itself is something to be appreciated.
By the way, my 1856 is graded AU-55 by PCGS (and is accurately graded imo).
