The Peace dollar market.

For some time now the Peace dollar market has been ho-hum while Morgans and everything else has gone up significantly over the last 2-3 years. During this time, the Peace $ "keys" lead the way but still at a snails pace. Morgan's went up over 100% while Peace dollar "keys" eeked out a 25% return.... Over the past few years, only a few coins in certain grades would "move" in a month. Maybe 4-6 coins at a time. About a year and a half ago, the common date 65's started to move up and actually doubled in price. This was really wierd considering the vast amount of "supply". Even Mr. Hall went on record as saying that common date Peace dollars would never be worth anything as there is just too much supply..... During their run-up, all of the other dates just sat there.....? People were looking for bargains, buying up "affordable" common date quality pieces. This kind of hurt the series as "collectors" couldn't make heads or tails out the demand that just wasn't there to support the run-up. This keep continuing.... certain dates would run up... and then plateau. Then another date.... and another plateau. Never did the series move in tandum with any demand for any date.

I've been following the sheets on ALL dates during this time and finally see the entire SERIES starting to move. This is something great for ANY series. It could be that collectors/investors have seen other series' "top" and are now moving into the Peace dollar series to search for bargains and return. In this past month, almost everything above MS60 moved up in price. Some just a little and some a lot. Some dates at certain grades even went down a bit.

My opinion for the series in the next 6 months is this.........

1) The entire series will see a "bump" of 20%-30% and "level off" wating to get bumped again.
2) The Keys will lead the way and see a greater return.
3) The common date 65's will remain the same and/or fall to lower levels.

If you've ever considered buying a Peace dollar, I think now is a great time before prices start to really move up quickly.

  • It has been pretty quiet. My set is a little more then half way done and a few are the keys and semi-keys. A couple years ago are so I got the 1934 - S in VF25 by PCGS for $75. I consider myself lucky in that sense that I got off cheap on that one, even though a lowly grade. I don`t have to be concerned about that one anymore unless I upgrade.

One in the set is a 1934 - D VAM 3 graded by PCGS as AU58 ( I have two VAM 3`s and one VAM 4!image ) I consider it one of the few highlights in the set so far.image It has good luster, good strike, white and problem free ( for the most part ). It`s one I consider keeping for along time.
  • Peace dollars have traditionally been poor investments as there are many more popular series that appreciate much faster. That's not to say that there couldn't be a big boom in Peace dollars, though. There are just too many mint state pieces out there because they weren't popular at the time of issue and most sat in bank bags for the greater part of their lives and didn't see much action. Other than the 21 the 28 and the 34-S, there are plenty of nice coins for everyone, so there probably won't be a huge upsurge in demand.

  • I have been considering entering the Peace Dollar market. My perception, and it could be wrong is that there is not hot demand like other areas ie, ASE and others. If I go to E-bay, and sometimes that's a good gage to see demand and supply, it looks like there is plenty of product but few buyers. I think the Peace Dollar is a great coin and probably one of the most undervalued but........... is there and will there be demand equal to the rest of the industry?

    baseball,

I agree with your disagreement. With the exception of the most common dates, Peace Dollars have a low survival rate at choice 63+, especially when you compare them to Morgans.

If sliderider had spoken of Morgans, it would be accurate for about 3/4ths of the dates. Less than 1/4th of the Peace Dollars would qualify. Eventually enough stronger collectors will be holding, and then the scarce dates will move solidly (IMO).

On a side note, which might be construed as a bit of a flame ... I wish those posting 20 something times a day had something more worthwhile and knowledgable to say ... but I guess for the sake of saying something, some people will spout on about anything ... as has been quite noticable of late

  • Not trying to "hype" the series.... just reporting what I've seen.... As far as supply and what is available in the market (Ebay for most) At any given time there's 10,000 Morgans for sale on ebay and just 2,000 Peace dollars. I only wish I could chose/look at 10k Peace $ a week..... Most of the high quality stuff over the past few years has been bought up. It will be interesting to see what happens to this series over the next 6 months.....

I have to agree with the ones who have said the higher grades are not common. The lower grade uncirculated coins are extremely plentiful..... but the MS64 on up changes very rapidly for the dates other than the common dates. There are many weakly struck coins with poor detail, many with hairlines, etc. The higher grades are truely sleeper coins in my opinion.

A check on the price guides reflect this.... and this is before any big demand by collectors for the series. If we get a little more demand by collectors or investors, as Peaceman has indicated may now be happening, those prices can change very rapidly due to not a very big supply of these coins being around.

I was hoping the demand would not happen for awhile.... I have not gotten very many of these coins yet for my collection! image

I did just pick up one of those 1934-D VAM 3's in lower grade MS.... it is definitely one of my favorites! A very wide and pronounced double die! I think if more collectors were aware of some of the neat varieties such as this, and the rarity of the higher grades..... this would be a tough series to find any coins in!

I'm one of those who have adopted the Peace dollar as my focus now. The morgan dollar market shot up so fast and high that I had to give it up. I'm sure hundreds of other collectors across the country have felt the same way.

I will say a high end 64, 65, 66 Peace dollar blast white, or nicely toned is a vision of beauty.

At my local coin show I've seen the same common date coins for ages, and the 28s seem to be stagnating now too, doesn't look like a boom to me.
