I have NEVER seen raw coins command such premiums!image

And just how is it that PCGS prices apply to raw coins?

These are the kind of auctions that send off warning bells in my head. Look at his feedback and check out what he has been selling and his auction style. Basic no frills auctions, cheap coins. Now if you look at the new auctions, what a difference!! I wouldn't touch anything he's selling right now.

I watched a guy about a month ago do the same thing. Rack up some positive feedback selling cheap coins, then three nights in a row, killer coins. He had a proof Morgan, 3 1889-CC's, all sorts of gold, the list was about 200 really high dollar coins. The day after the last auction, he was no longer a registered user!! I keep wondering if everyone who bid on his auctions got ripped off. My guess is yesimage

Interesting... Joined Ebay in March. Didn't sell anything until Sept. Sells a bunch of <$1.00 coins. Now lists lots of raw "gems."

The only thing that doesn't shout scam is he takes Paypal. However, I predict...
He will have his first neg in about 10 days and then they'll be rolling in when the second round of auctions closes.

Has anyone ever tried reporting these irrelevant references to PCGS grading pricing to eBay? Not that it will do any good BUT you never know.

  • Bajjerfan,

    Report it to EBAY ?

    Surely you jest ?

PCGS could nip this in the bud easily:
    1. Put a copyright notice on the price list with a note saying these prices may only be quoted for PCGS coins.
    2. Become a "partner" with Ebay and inform them that any other use of the list violates copyright.
    3. Then, any such quote reported to Ebay should end the auction.

Why don't they? Has anyone asked HRH about it, or don't they care how the list is used?

To jest or not to jest? That is the question. Yeah I know reporting stuff like that to eBay is probly a waste of time BUT you never know; they mite smoeday wise up image.

Nice pix and eye catching presentations have these people bidding crazy money.image I've never seen such prices realized for raw coins. My instincts tell me something's fishy here...perhaps multiple shillers?

My issue with everyone quoting the PCGS price list is simple. The PCGS pricing guide applies exclusively to PCGS certified coins, not NGC, NTC, PCI raw coins etc.

Just a suggestion but if PCGS was my company I'd be all over this. Let all these people quote "Current Trends", NOT PCGS' certified coin pricing guide.

All this has no relevance/ no connection to PCGS. A raw coin cannot be compared to a PCGS graded/ certified coin. It's utterly ridiculous. If the coins are truly that great then why are they not in PCGS holders? There MUST be someway to stop this misuse of the pricing guide.

Perhaps a disclaimer of sorts, kinda like the one the NFL uses would be in order. " This has been an NFL production. Any use or rebroadcast of this without the expressed written permission of the NFL is strictly prohibited and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowable by law." It's like copyright infringement.

    What do you think?

  • It seems that it would be easy enough for Ebay to detect someone with sudden unusual listing habits.

This type of person is relatively rare. Coins are one of the few things that this kind of thing can happen with.

We live in an age where computers could detect this kimd of listing and create a series of follow ups that can be performed by Ebay.

    Maybe I am being naive.
    Just seems preventable.

Run for the hills!!! This is the classic "build up feedback with cheap stuff", then do a "selling blitz with expensive stuff and run" deal. Looks to me like the guy got impatient -- only a 19 rating --- other scammer usually build about 100 or 200. You see this with video games all the time (saw it with one other coin seller as well).

I predict NARU in 4-6 weeks, after the buyers of the expensive stuff realize they have been had. image

So what DID everyone think of that 1932 quarter?

Looked MS-63 to me. A nice choice BU quarter but certainly not gem. But basing it on pics only.

Call me overly cautious, but IMHO, it looks like this person is building up his feedbacks (with help from friends/relatives) for a BIG scam to come.image

So why can't the dorks from eBay spot these trends when it is pointed out to them and nip fraud in the bud? I think someone should sue eBay for failure to take preventative measures when a situation like this is presented to them.

This is why reporting such activity is totally useless WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!

Thank you for writing eBay's SafeHarbor Department about a current
listing you would like us to investigate for fraudulent activity. We
are concerned about this type of activity and want to assure you that we
will review your report as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours.

Due to privacy concerns, we will not keep you informed about the status
of our investigation. While you will only receive this acknowledgement
of the receipt of your report, please be assured that we will thoroughly
    review the situation.

    IMPORTANT NOTE:
The subject line you chose on the webform is reserved for reporting
current items that may be listed for the purpose of committing fraud.
In order for us to dedicate resources to preventing this type of
situation in a timely manner, emails directed to this area that do not
relate to current listings that may be fraudulent will NOT be forwarded
to another department or answered. If you have any other concerns, you
need to go back to the Rules & Safety Webform and resubmit your email by
selecting a subject line that is more relevant to your concern:

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html

The department that reviews the emails submitted using this subject line
does not investigate listing violations, items you think are prohibited
on the site or reports of image theft (please review the options
available under the topic "Questionable Content"). If you are a
participant on a listing that has already ended, this subject line is
also NOT the way to report that type of situation (you should resubmit
your email using another issue- we suggest you review the "Transaction
Problems" or "Member Problems" sections). Emails directed to this area
that do not relate to current listings that may be fraudulent will NOT
be forwarded to another department or answered.

We appreciate the time you took to contact us. To promote a safe
trading environment for the eBay community, we prohibit users from
engaging in any type of unlawful activity on the eBay web site and are
    dedicated to investigating such situations.

    received.

  • okay - I give up- what's odd?
  • BoomBoom Posts: 10,165
All his auctions just seem "unusual"...the prices realized on raw coins. I've NEVER seen a 1932 go for $250 raw! On this auction however, maybe it's just the way it unfolds to me that seems odd. You have a bidder that has 0 feedback who runs up the bids then just quits, then there is another with all of 3 that takes over and runs it up and also stops, but it's the last underbidder that strikes me as being most odd. He runs up the backside of the eventual winner(Note the time) and then just promptly stops after pushing the bid up that high. It's not like the winner sniped this at the end. This second place bidder just pushes and pushes the eventual winner higher and higher to what was his high bid, obviously made earlier.

I have something to take care of, be back shortly. Check it out. Something is definitely up with this guy. He sure gets a lot of "help."image
  • It looks like "collect it all forever" had a very high max bid (note the time was well before auction close) and the underbidder kept putting in bids trying to top "collect it all's max bid but never did. This is not unusual -- in an attempt to snipe I have put in 4 or 5 bids at the last minute only to be "outbid" by a very high max bid put in earlier.

So the bidding may not be necessarily suspect, but I still think this guy is going to run after he takes everyones money from these latest expensive auctions. imageimage
  • Why run? He's selling clean unc coins that anyone can get their hands on. imageimage
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 11,953 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hmmm, boom, you may have a point. The underbidder saw that the price was not a full increment over his last bid, yet he stopped and did not snipe.

But not conclusive yet, but warrants further monitoring.

    no question shill bidding.

I understand that shill bidding is a big problem but a LOT of that can be alleviated if people would take the time to learn about the VALUE of coins, select a MAX bid and STICK with it.

I've wondered why his feedback isn't higher. He's been running quantities like this for months. The average Joe would be at about 100+. Which could also mean, people are buying his stuff and unsatisfied, thus not leaving feedback...strange.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

image Somehow if I'm thinking of a max bid and an intention to snipe, even if I'd feel a little violated that I might pay more than I have to because of a shill, the bright side is that I'd still either get the coin at or below what I was willing to pay for it, or let someone else take the hit.
  • I'm pretty sure this guy is the Ebay seller Chadlings , whom has been in a similar discussion on this board previously. Chadlings is NARU.
