Grrr...Ebay Sniper Angers Chuck

I thought I had it...a beautiful MS66FB 43-S merc...for $64. This coin easily sells for $85+ with some on heritage going for more than $100. With 16 sec left, I was killed. Loser face swooped in and laid a bid for $65!! image I should have bid $80! Should coulda woulda, old boy! But then I don't know what's worse, losing to a sniper or having the final price pumped up to a less-than-bargain amount. Oh well, just thought I'd vent. Anyone else have similar ebay quagmires to share

link to my disappointment

Looks like a nice merc- but the sniping happens to all of us..... it's happened to me more times than I can remember. A lot of times now, if I see a coin I really like, I forget about trying to get a bargain and throw out a very full retail bid- it beats being pissed off........

  • He may not have bid 65. He may have bid more. 65 was just all it took to beat your 64. You still may not have won. 16 seconds is a long time, so I don't consider that a snipe. This is why I nursemaid my auctions until the end and am ready with a countersnipe if I think the item is really worth it.

Hi, I agree - if you want it win it. If I REALLY want something in the other areas I collect (besides coins) my single bid (placed ever so delicately near closing time) is sometimes 5x or more the high bid. I view it as an auction - in the sense we can all lose - so I look at all bids the same - early, "snipe" and whatever else. Sorry you lost though image

Yep, had a Morgan dollar that I thought would really grade out well from the pics (I know pics can get you in trouble sometimes) The Morgan was selling for $18 at the time I placed my bid. The Morgan looked PL to me so I shot a bid in at $60 (wasn't going to be around when it ended) had the high at $20 until the last few seconds and a snipe got me. If it was a PL it was worth the $60 raw, grading fees would have put it over its value. If it was not PL, it was a $20 coin. So I was probably better off the "0" bidder got me just thought no one would go that high.

  • I put in my last bid at the max I am willing to go for a item.
If someone wants it even more bad than i do, then oh well, that's the way it goes.

  • I wouldn't get angry if my bid at %75 of the value of a coin was topped. If I did I would walk around angry all the time. image

I've had many experiences like that. It's not so bad anymore now that I've learned to look at the coin, look at other previous recent sales of that item (eBay, Heritage, Teletrade, etc.), decide how I like that coin relative to the others I'm looking up and determine my "best offer," which I snipe about 3-5 seconds before the auction ends. As others have said, if I win, I know I haven't overpaid for it (relative to what it's worth to me), and if I don't win, I know I didn't overpay and that someone else just wanted it more.

    That wasn't a snipe.

If the coin easily sells for $85+, why are you upset that you didn't get the coin on your $64 bid? If you're going to lowball like that, expect a lot more of the same.

    16 seconds is not a snipe-a snipe is a 1, 2, or 3 second bid.
That's what you get for being a stingy cheapskate!
What was you thinking bidding $64 on a $100 coin with over 100 hits on the viewcounter? You shoulda figured somebody else might have some interest in winning it.

  • he could have bid $125, Ebay only shows next bidding level and shows it as a high bid. So, he could have overpaid had you continued bidding.

  • Hey, if there's something on Ebay you can't live without, put in a decent bid. Another way is to just bid $10,000 on everything you want.
Sure you may pay top dollar that way, but you'll be a WINNER everytime.

It sells even easier for $65 when nobody bids higher.

I'm not upset about the price, I was grumpy because I committed a major ebay faux pas by not entering an amount that I was willing to pay, and I didn't nurse the bid down to the last second. Besides, since I started ebay coin shopping about two months ago, I have overpaid for about half the coins, but that's b/c I really wanted them which suggests that with this latest auction, it would have been nice to get the coin for $64, but it's okay that I didn't.

Looking back, I'm sorta glad I didn't win. It enabled me to do some more bargain shopping for mercs, and I was able to pick up a fresh 1941-S MS66FB Merc for $49 shipped using BIN (goes for $58-$71 on heritage, lo of $50, hi $80+ with only 3 of 33 selling for less than $50). Plus if I want to, I could use BIN $70 for another 43-S I found. That's what I love about ebay...steady supply of relatively common coins!

  • Hi,

David Lawrence Rare Coins often has some well priced Wingled Liberty 10c, and you can do well in the online auctions also. S&H is included with online orderds too (not in the auctions).

  • I hope you get some other nice mercs chuckC!

  • I don't like to bid early because it gives others too much time to think about it. They inch up little by little until someone pays more than its worth. I do my homework, wait until the last 10 seconds and enter my MAXIMUM. If I win thats good, if not then someone else wanted it more.

Listen to the Dog, those who whine about snipers are trying to be cheapskates.

  • I seldom place a bid.If there is something I want I put it in my watching page and snipe it.

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.
