Dog97 Just called me!

goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
He and his girl made it thru IVAN. He said that his house is not even missing a shingle but everything else that he has seen is destroyed. He has no electricity and has no idea when it may be back in service..........possibly days or even weeks.

I attempted to update him on IVAN and what was going on. He was wanting to know if there are any curfews or anything being imposed that I knew of. I did not and could not find anything on them.

He was going to head out and drive around in his truck and take some pics! He says they have plenty of food, etc.....

If I mailed him a battery op radio.............do you guys think he would get it before the power comes back on????

if so, anyone got his address??? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Wow! Thanks for the update. It is great to hear he made it through safe and sound. I heard there were tornadoes. I hope others don't suffer looting, boy that would be pouring salt into a wound...

He doesn't have a battery operated radio! I offered to mail him one of the too many we have here but we don't know if he'd even receive it.

    ???
  • If he calls again... tell him that generally, if the power is out, there's a curfew... better safe than sorry, but that's how it was in Florida. If the power was out, curfew...

Add me to the list of the happy campers. If he needs anything, let's work together to make sure we provide. It seems as though our prayers at least worked for him.

Thanks for the update, goose. I was really wanting to hear all was well.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Good to hear they're ok and have a telephone. Quite a few people in Port Charlotte still don't have a phone or cable after 5 weeks.

    Oh happy day! image
  • You probally won't get anything mailed into the area for quite a while... even over the weekend of Frances, I had two First-Class packages that took a week to deliver... they were both shipped the Thursday before Frances and didn't arrive until last Friday... One from New Jersey, one from Idaho...

I hope this thing stays away from I-95

We're leaving the Poconos first thing tomorrow and heading back to Port Charlotte. If this thing stays away we should be back late saturday.

Anyone have any info on how far east this thing is going and the timeline????

    Thanks in advance

  • I'm in Birmingham - it's been raining since dawn.

The wind REALLY picked up about noon and had to be gusting to about 60 or so - quite impressive.

Trees down, power outages all over town but I guess our neighborhood got lucky. We've had a few flickers but that's all. No damage that I can see yet.
  • WHAT??? No cable for 5 weeks and counting?????

No phone, no cable, no roof.

    Roofs will take a year.

Real case scenario. Worst case? Longer than a year.

I'm going to bet there's a lot of people in the gulf states going to be going thru similar experiences.

    Terrible.

  • Just talked to my Aunt in Birmingham...they are alright...looks like all Birmingham got was flooding across I 59 and many trees down.

  • Glad everyone is safe.

Ol' Ivan just spent the last three hours in my back yard and is still howling. More rain than anything else. Rain guage for the day is over 6". The creek out back is over the banks and moving towards the house. Hope we are able to stay dry.

Glad to hear everything is OK.

These hurricanes make me thankful that I'm in the west on a hill in the mountains in a almost desert environment. 6 inches of rain is half of the yearly total here.

  • Oh crap. There went the power.image Have about 20 minutes left on the power supply then I'm outta here.

Edited to add: Cool, my son says the UPS will run for a couple of hours and he says I can hookup his power inverter to my car so I can run online for hours in the dark.

Edited again: Power back on. Only out for a little over a half hour. Not bad.

    I'm back.
Thanks a lot goose. He's a great guy.
Less than 24 hours without power. My power company kicks ass!!!
This thing was a breeze. I stood out on my front porch and watched the trees go crazy. Until the eye went over and the wind & rain started blowing onto my porch then I went inside & went to bed.
Lots of tree damage but not much structural damage. For some reason residental dwellings were spared but commercial buildings were heavily damaged.
I think Gulf Shores & Orange Beach was completely wiped out.
Thanks for all the good words everybody. Yall are cool! image

Very happy to hear you & your family escaped major damage Dog. Yes, Goose is a great guy I'd want in my bunker at times like this. That weather map you posted of the projected course of Ivan, right through your backyard, sent shivers down my spine. Do you have any trees left to rebuild in? (Your daughter's treehouse I mean image)

PS: when I heard your house didn't even lose a shingle I thought of that great "building a house" thread you posted in the open forum. Yours must have been crafted as well as that one.
