Windows Service Pack II

Hi guys and gals. Off the subject a warning PLEASE DO NOT DOWN LOAD WINDOWS SERVICE PACK II. It's corrupted somehow and will screw your compurter up and keep you from getting on the internet. Happened to my son and me. He lives 400 miles from me. It is cable only I think. I was off for 5 days as soon as my son called me and told me to uninstall the service pack which I did it worked. Window's doesn't have the guts to send out a Press Realese to aleart the public. No they want us to look like fools when we call out cable companies. Hope I save somebody some misery.

Did you assure that there was no spyware on your computer prior to upgrading? I downloaded Service Pack II a week ago with no problems. From what I have heard, many of the problems people have received from service pack II are a result of spyware.

I'm assuming you're talking about XP service pack 2? If so, I've downloaded it to both our Dells, mine and my mother-in-law's with no problem what so ever. Best feature is the pop up blocker. It's about time!

My take on it right now is that many home computers are having decent success with SP2 for XP. On the corporate front, we are avoiding it like the plague. It breaks several applications, and many of those are Microsoft products (such as SQL apps).

It's a crap shoot. Some systems it'll be fine, and others will get trashed. Best to stay away from it for now.

  • Had my Norton running so Spyware shouldn't have been a problem I jus wonder why they (Windows) admitted they were having a problem to my son. As soon as I un-installed I was able to get back on the internet. Now this is cable modem only.

  • I think you son's computer has spyware and adware that screw up the computer. I downloaded XP SP2 a week a go with no problems.
Let him check and delete the temp directory under the local setting, there were most spyware and adware put their programs.
    HTH and good luck.

  • I getting a lot of answer saying that it worked OK for most everyone All I can say is Windows admitted they were having trouble with Cable modems and to un-install it and you could get back on line and it work. My system is XP

I don't get any POPUP or any AD at all, After I cleaned my computer from all those spyware and adware.
Let him try deleting that subdirectory and good luck
  • I downloaded service pack 2 to my dell running xp 2 weeks ago and no problems here

  • Deepnds on how you connect to the Internet, and your ISP.

I have found that recv() calls to udp sockets have a magic extra 28 bytes that do not exist on the wire, and cannot be seen with Sniffer or Ethereal. Presumably this is some undocumented security layer that has been added with XP SP2. This alone could break certain programs that communicate using Ethernet . Who knows what else has changed.
  • I downloaded and installed the update to my PC via Cable Modem with Comcast and had no problems. I am using XP pro.
Since I already had Symantec/Norton firewall and antivirus and internet security on my PC, I did not install Microsoft's version, when it prompted me about it.
I suspect it has a problem with Microsoft's Firewall. It probably has some settings and stuff need to be set.
My setup is somewhat more complicated as I have a Cable modem plugged into a router firewall, fromwhich I plug in my PC, which has it's own firewall too.

Ummmm...no. Windows XPSP2 is not overly problematic.
That is incorrect to state that it is corrupted "somehow" and will "screw up your computer".

I am using a cable modem. I installed XPSP2 yesterday without a problem.

Now, my mom THOUGHT she had a problem when she called me after installing XPSP2 but it seems that she wasn't waiting long enough for her PC to COMPLETELY finish the install.

Yes...there are some problems out there. No, it isn't everyone and to tell EVERYONE not to install the latest in updates/patches/security just because you had an issue is not cool.
If there were widespread problems, it WOULD be in the papers. The papers love to castigate certain people/companies and Microsoft is one of them.

Now, something that has been demonstrated to be a crapshoot of problems is having a firewall and then when XPSP2 installs with the security features and firewalls, it has been known to cause some issues.

Did you try talking to your cable modem ISP? No? You were afraid of looking like a fool? Don't know unless you try it now do ya?

You know, when some people upgraded from Windows98 to WindowsXP, some things got broken. It was in the papers to be careful on the upgrade, etc.
Turns out that, yes, some things didn't work after the install. It was due to WindowsXP FIXING things and doing the RIGHT thing. The broken items were using hacks, shortcuts, doing things that weren't done correctly, etc.

btw....I was tech support years ago (officially.....unofficially, my family/friends think I still am tech support image ) and I saw a lot of things.
It was common for people to blame the PC maker and/or Microsoft when it was actually something else's problem.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

This won't be the first time that the Evil Empire has done something in violation of IEEE/IAB+POSIX specs. Where are those extra 28 bytes - beginning or end of each UDP datagram? Haven't looked at the code for sniffer or ethereal, but I guess they look at the beginning of each packet and read up to the expected # of bytes based on the packet type. It's not really a chore to write a perl program to interrogate an interface and dump each byte into a logfile.

Just installed SP2 on my XP Pro SP1 notebook last night. Did it via the Auto Update facility. Now I'm nervous, but should be ok with 2 other XP systems in my apt. My boss told me that he did it to his PC at work, and it gave me the perfect opportunity to glare at him! image

They are coming back again tomorrow to try again but I'll have to call them and tell them I fix it.

I'm really not sure what a cable modem would have to do with anything in this situation.

    What Russ said....
  • How did you clean up the spyware? Did you have to buy a program for it?

First, try to avoid it. The three worst sites to visit are porn, music and game ones. Oh yeah, maybe gambling sites? Install a good Antivirus app, keep it up to date, and keep your system current with Microsoft critical patches. I know the latest version of Symantec AntiVirus (Corporate edition) has some built-in protection against spyware as well.

To remove Spyware, the best applications are SpyBot (free) and Ad-Aware (not free).

In some cases, it is easier for us to re-image a computer (start over, either with a Ghost image, the CD's that came with the computer - i.e. a recovery CD, or start with the OS CD if you bought one), than to spend the hours required to clean and pursue rogue processes and registry entries. Make sure you backup any data before taking this more drastic measure.

Has anyone mentioned this is off-topic? Maybe this should be in the open forum. So, do you collect coins?
