A Whole NEW eBay Scam (I Think) - BEWARE: VERY DECEPTIVE!!!

I was a bidder on THIS item. I was NOT the high bidder. Today I get an e-mail with a 2nd chance offer but that the e-mail is "signed" by romanut1 - a France based user that just joined eBay 9/4/04

The main body of the e-mail said:

"You expressed interest in an item titled "Rare! 1970-S Doubled Die Obv. Lincoln - PCGS (MS64RB)"(Item # 3927627431) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy the seller shortsleeved makes this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price (price deleted). The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or the seller has duplicate items for sale. If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. To see this item, click on the link:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31373&item=3927627431&rd=1 To learn about Second Chance Offer go to: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/personal_offer.html Thank you, eBay, Inc."

I contacted "shortsleeved" & he insists that he didn't send the 2nd chance offer AND that he's been made aware of a few others of these recently. Here's the kicker - when you click on the "respond now" button, you get prompted for your eBay user ID & password. I stupidly entered mine but after about 3 minutes of investigating the veracity of the offer & changed my password. I'm VERY lucky to have done so so quickly. This is the 1st time I have EVER (almost) fallen for one of these scams & it appears to be a fairly new way to get your login info.

There seems to be a flood of novel Ebay and other ID-theft emails out there.

Routinely send anything unsolicited from anybody purporting to be from Ebay to spoof@ebay.com, and they'll email you back about it. Otherwise, only go directly to Ebay and log in to your account directly to check out things. NEVER respond to the email itself. Many of them look VERY convincing.

I'm not sure I understand..........how can someone benefit from having your Ebay login information?
  • Scam. Report it to ebay.

  • They basically steal your account.
They can change your password, to keep you out.
They can change the email address to one of theirs.
They can change the address to one of theirs.
Then they proceed to rip off however they see fit.
Ruining your reputation in the process.
If nothing else, they can go on a auction buying spree just to mess up your day.
Most people use a common password, thus they can gain access to other things like Paypal maybe.
    Idenity theft is another possibility.

  • They can wreak havoc on your ID by bidding in your name and even if they don't get the items that they bid on and defraud someone, your reputation is still screwed.

  • They can sell a bunch of stuff under your account and have the money sent to them
You get the neg when it doesnt ship
  • Also (and I think this is how it works)--following the link and putting in a fake password or "funny" answers will allow them access to your computer. They can put in spyware to record keystrokes and get valuable info on you. So I just totally ignore them.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • I had this discussion with someone awhile back. Is it better to stay logged into eBay or log in and out each time. It seems if you are logged in, then no one can get in but you unless they ...well I don't know.

  • This has happened to me.I had to change all my info (on E-bay).They were selling items on e-bay under my password.I could not use e-bay for over a couple of months. If I remember correctly the group involved was from FRANCE.

  • There is a Paypal scam going around that claims to be a receipt for a payment made, my ISP Spam Filter keeps blocking it !!

  • A lot of the scam e-mails that contain links could also have keystroke virus's.

So, you don't want to click on the links at all, to even see if it is legit.

Just copy the item number and check your self
