1893-CC Morgan.. Opinions before upgrade submission... Grade posted!!

I need some opinions before I decide whether to send this coin in for a upgrade.I think the reverse would definitely make it. The obverse is what held it back I'm sure.
I'll reveal the grade later after getting some feedback.

I believe they way they grade, the obverse grade is stressed MUCH more than the reverse grade. Typically, the only thing a reverse can do is bring the grade down (if there is something wrong with it).

I'll say MS64, although it is difficult to really determine the coin's grade based on the picture provided.

Looks like a solid 3 shot 4, if your going for a 5, I wouldnt waste the money, unless the phot is not showing how nice it is.

Didnt even realize were discussing a 93-cc. That changes things a tad. This coin if not in a three holder should be at least thier based on the photo's. Whatever the grade is and it looks like it has a shot at the next higher, then definitely worth trying as you are talking little to no downside potential (submission cost) and a helI of a lot upside potential with the spreads.

  • I also agree that the coin is MS63.

  • Whats going on with the ear? Is it just the photo? I know that 93CCs are weakly struck at the center but this has a strange color to it.

Randy: Your 1893-CC looks like an MS-63 in my opinion. It would be tough to get a 64 with the combination of weak strike over Miss Liberty's ear, and the numerous light contact marks on Miss Liberty's cheek -- may be a long-shot-64.

If the coin currently grades 62, then I'd definately send it in for a possible 63, with reasonably good odds.

If it currently grades 63, then I'd probably send it in for a potential 64, with low odds.

    When in doubt, don't.

I think it is in a 62 holder at the moment and it has a shot at 63. 64 or 65 is just not possible. Please do not view my comments as negative... it is a nice coin, but the strike is just not there for a grade higher than 63. BTW, I own one that is slighly weak too that is in a 63 and I doubt it would 64.

Thanks to all for their opinions. The coin currently resides in a older PCGS holder graded 62. I feel it has the potential of making 63. I would be happy with that. The ear area is a little flat and has just a bit of a rub mark. Its hard to tell from the pics but the coin has a proof-like appearance, just shy of what it would take to get the designations. I'll be sending it in with my next submission.

If those are reeding marks just to the left of the Eagle's wing and coupled with the obverse chatter, this one will probably remain in a MS62 holder. JMHO.

From the photo's, I cant see any reason why it wont 63 easily?
  • I don't know. There appears to be a little too much action on the obverse. Very iffy on the 63. I don't think I'd waste a submission trying to upgrade.

this is a tough call... because of the value of a 63 in the current market. If it were my coin (without the benefit of seeing it... and if it were in one of the really old rattler PCGS holder) I would leave in that holder because it will always have a pemium. If you crack it and it comes back 62, well it just doesn't help...
