What's the most expensive coin you've ever purchased........RAW?

Were you nervous about it? Was it hard to write that check? Did you run it by everyone on the boards first and they all screamed don't do it!!!!!!unless its slabbed? (excepy dorkkarl)

I think most of my biggest raw buys were clustered around the $300 area, around 4-5 years ago. All of the 1869-1872 XF/AU Indian cents I bought for my date collection were bought raw, and all in that price range, give or take a little. I bought two of them from JJ Teaparty, one from Eagle Eye and one from Heritage if I recall correctly.

Probably it was a VF 1893-s Morgan $, but I wasnt that nervous as it was definitley genuine and fully original. (from a show) I ended up getting it holdered at PCGS in Vf-25. This was a few years ago so the price was a little less than today about 2100.00 Course I no longer have it as I have upgraded.

In the $250 to $450 range for some US Large Cents, and a few US gold pieces. Didn't make me nervous at all 'cause I've known the dealer since about 1976.

Think I paid something like $550 for an 1800 Bust dollar that the dealer had graded F15. I thought it was F12, myself. I was a little concerned about the color, as it was a grey I am not used to seeing, but it wasn't bad looking and I liked it.

Sent it to ANACS and they didn't net grade it, but they only gave it a VG8. I think that was a bit harsh- it should've gotten VG10 at least. It really did look Fine to both the dealer and I.

Almost $75k for the Vermuele 1873-CC trade dollar. Right before that was $54k for the Amon Carter 1874-CC:

$325 for an 1885-O dime advertised on eBay. It turned out to be a F-12 as advertised, worth $500.

Hmm, I guess that would also be the most expensive coin I've ever bought since I've never bought one slabbed. About $300.

  • Got a Lincoln 09-S VDB raw from ebay for 700.00. Sent it to ANACS, AU details, net XF. It was a risky buy, but the coin was worth the money.

Bought a roll of 1928-D cents in blazing BU (kept in mineral oil for 60 years until broken up) back in 1970 for $300. Probably responsible for nearly all the high mint state cents listed in MS-65 red and better in the PCGS pop reports. I should NEVER have broken up that roll.

Still have my original 1919 BU cent roll also purchased in 1971.

My newer favorite is a Gem BU roll of 1936-S quarters I bought in the last several years for $5000. All raw.

But what about buying a coin sight unseen? The GSA dollars in the unopened boxes? Paid well into the in the hundreds each for them.

  • paid about $300 for a 3 cent piece from Birddog here on the forums. Got it graded and it came back MS something or other, then traded it to LM for some other material.

I bought a raw 1904-S XF Barber half for $750 from Randy Holder. I also bought a SEGS XF40 1897-S half (isn't SEGS like buying raw?image) for $700.00

My local coin dealer has a raw AU58 1904-S half they are asking $3500 for. Am I friggin crazy for even considering it? Man is it scarce in AU and Mint State though.

My most expensive raw coin purchase was a circ 1852 dollar from a major auction. After serving time as a pocket piece, it has since become entombed. Man, oh, man - that was quite a coin to hold raw in my hand!

Funny story - I once gave it to Coinosaurus to hold. He wanted to see it. As he extended his hand, I became afraid because his was shaking so much. I let him take it anyway, because I trust him and because of the carpetting. But, you gotta see his hand shake... I almost wet myself, partially from fright and partially from the humor.

I remember that piece. ANACS graded it MS61 but it looked nicer than that. It sold fairly fast at my coin booth, but I don't recall paying or getting anything like $300 on it. It was a sweet coin, though. Birddog had some nice raw material. Wonder what became of him.

PS- Mike- remember that little 1861 half dime that we had a wager on? You thought it was MS and I thought it was AU at best, and possibly cleaned? (I won the wager but we were both right in a way- it came back UNC details, Cleaned, Net AU50). Anyway, that was also a nice looking piece despite the net grade- it ended up in Baley's famous Dansco type set, and looks great there.

  • Of my coin collection, 95% are raw coins, mostly in albums.
  • Most expensive I bought raw was $700 for a 1872 $3 gold in XF. Didn't realize
how lucky I was that PCGS agreed with the grade!

I paid almost 2 grand for two 79-CC Morgans in their GSA holders; I bought them from a woman who inherited them from her grandfather. She responded to a post I made on a bulletin board next to a Ralph's Supermarket in So. CA.
  • All the coins I've ever purchased are raw. I (over)paid $37.50 for an AU 1863 IHC way back when I was 13. That was a lot of money then. I also paid close to that same amount at the time for a 1860-O $1 in (at best) AG for the type set. I guess that makes me the lowest-budget collector in this thread so far.
My coins can beat up your coins.

$550 for a 1872 IHC that I knew had been messed with but had such a strong strike I bought it anyway. Prior to 1986 several raw morgans.
