Need PCGS slab history; Regency holder

I am looking for some guidance on PCGS slabs. I'm working on a set of holders. I know, buy the coin, not the holder. Well, I'm strange at times.

Anyway, I need a Regency Holder with a Morgan Dollar in it. Anyone willing to sell? I'd pay for a lead to one.

Also, is there a publication on the history of the holder designs?

What Hoot said- conder101 wrote the book on slab varieties. Literally.

I saw a Morgan in a Regency holder at a show in Raleigh a few years ago, but haven't seen any since.

Edit: hey... I just saw your sig line...you're NCNA! It was at an NCNA show that I saw the coin.

    Ash,

Here's a link to Conder101's thread with pictures. You're looking for #9. image

Finding low-value coins in Regency slabs is a feat. Most of the coins in them were high-end. A low value coin in a Regency slab would probably bring a big premium just because of slab collectors. This is the same thing that is seen whenever a NGC 1st generation "black insert" holder appears.

"Black insert"? If you mean black core, I agree, they're tough.

The white plastic core along with the gold stamped NGC logo on the reverse and the plain white paper insert (with no NGC logo) is also somewhat difficult to find but not nearly as expensive.

The last Black NGC slab that sold on ebay was in 2002 to Conder 101.

I think greattoning still has a photo of an 81S green dollar in a Regency Holder that said "Real Toning" --- only coin ever certified by PCGS as "real toning." --- Kind of a chuckle!!! ----- Maybe he can post it....He also has the first coin slabbed by ANACS (KA00001), a cool rainbow merc -- Hey Dick, we are bored, how about some photos?????image

Serial # is too long, but that is probably a typo, should be two letters and four digits. However I was under the impression that I own the insert of the first ANA slab. the gentleman I gotit from had a letter from ANACS stating that the first coin slabbed by ANACS was a mercury dime with the serial number XX0000 (I don't remember the number and I can't lay my hands on the insert at the moment. but it was something like WK0018.) I was unable to acquire the slab and it was cracked out but I do have the insert, somewhere. It sonds like I ned to confirm the infromation with ANACS myself though

Ashmore, Good luck on finding your Regency slab. You have a tough search ahead of you.

This is Dick from greattoning. I emailed you quite some tome ago concerning the #1 ANACS Slab(an MS67 Mercury) which I recieved comfirmation from ANACS. I still have the coin in the holder intact and unless someone got into my bank vault it should be still thereimage

Pedigree from Dick, from me, from Washington Rare Coins about 12 years ago..... They advertised the coin in Coin World as first slabbed. Think I paid $350 for it back then.....are Coin World's old issues on line to search for the original ad??....or, does anyone at Washington RC have any institutional knowledge???
