Grade the circulated indian cents.

Since we always seem to do MS coins, I'll throw out a couple circulated ones.

F15 for the 1859 and F12 for the 1908-S. Neither coin appears to be choice...to many small surface marks.

I'm one step up on both from 291, I think VF20 (average quality) on the 59, and F12 to 15 on the 80s (so-so)

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

  • I'm with Todd - Liberty on the 59 is crystal clear
  • '59 VF

    '08-S EF

    Nice looking indians

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    I'd say VF-20 for the '59 and F-15 for the '08-S.

    I would prefer to call

    1859 Vf-25
    1908-s F-15

but I think the TPG's might go a full vf-20 on the 08-s the way they have been grading circ indians
  • The 1859 - VF

The 1908-S - what are you guys looking at? An indian head cent has to have a full "LIBERTY" to rate Fine. The"B" is half gone, the "E" is three-fourths gone, the "R" is half gone, the "Y" is completely gone. Looks like a Very Good to me.

  • The first coin looks cleaned. Notice the dark areas around the recesses of the devices and the bright clean fields?

Both coins look better when looking at them lifesize in normal light. The lighting I use is ultra-harsh and really brings out any imperfections on the surface. I'm always surprised at how bad most circulated coins look when blown up to poster size.

    Mike,

That was the way the standards used to be and IMO still should be, but there not today. PCGS as well as the others are calling coins F and Vf with Liberty visible, but not necessarily clear. I have sent several better date indians that I bought as Vg-10's in and they consistently come back F-15, Vf-20 and such.

Same thing with early circ lincolns. Coins that I used to call solid Vf-30's are catching Xf, and solid Xf-45 are catching Au-50 and 53 grades.
