3000th Post Giveaway (with the caveat you give the coin(s) to a YN) WINNERS!

In celebration of 3,000 posts and 2 plus years, I would like to offer a little giveaway, with the footnote that I would ask the winner to give the coin to a YN, whether a son or daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew, neighbor etc. It's not a fabulous rarity, but something a YN might enjoy: a PCGS PR-66 1964 Accented Hair JFK. (I thought it might go 67, but alas ... ) At any rate, we will leave the competition open until midnight (EDT) Friday, Sept. 3. In 50 words or less, describe what you do -- or plan to do -- to promote our great hobby to kids. (Things, both great and small, count ... For example, one the the things I do, I walk around coin shows with a pocketful of common date VF Buffs and had them out to the kids; when my kids were in elementary school, sent them to show and tell with early Wheats and Buffs to give to every kid, etc.; save new state quarters for the kids of co-workers who I know are collecting them; etc. Cite your examples.) I am sole judge and jury (and executioner) and will select the winning mini-essay. I also will pick two runners-up who will receive an assortment of raw Jeffs and Buffs to present to their favorite YN. Post in this thread to enter ... Thanks to all, it has been a great run, one I hope continues for many years ...

Sorry for the delay, but the winners are: pursuitofliberty (AH JFK), nederveit and desertrat (YN nickel packages).

Winners PM me with names, addresses. Thanks for all the great ideas and keep sharing with YNs.

Well I am a YN, so I dont know if this counts. But for christmas, I give my friends different coins. Normally only a few interesting ones like a couple mercurys and buffalos. This year they all get birth year proofsets! They seem to enjoy them alot!
  • I am a YN and i was going to give a gift packet to five students in my classes to see if they start collecting coins. Take a look at the link in my sig line.

I have 13 nieces and nephews, and every year I give them a variety of coins for their birthday (I also give them a "real" gift). I always include a description of the coins I send them, and when they were minted. Several have commented how cool they are, so I hope it eventually fuels a long-term interest. They range in age from 1-18.

I also tell them they own them, so they can spend them if they really want to do that. Feels like a win-win situation!
  • Great idea for a contest RGL, your going to make some YN's happy.

    hey Randy

good thread!! i just try to show some encouragement to YN's whenever someone at our clubs brings a son/daughter. also, when i happen to be at a show table and a YN is present i try to get them talking about what they're collecting. too many times kids seem overwhelmed at shows or too embarrassed to talk. the fun is in prying open the box and lettin' pandora out!!!

  • I regularly put buff nickels and worn IHCs into change and into my credit union coin counting machines. I also give pre 1964 quarters to the pizza delivery guys as tips--don't know if anyone actually appreciates them--I also send older coins to YNs on this board when the opportunity arises.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • All 12 grandchildren ALWAYS get coins for birthdays and Christmas. The only one old enough to appreciate them yet (and he does!) just turned nine, and is real excited about the coins and supplies that I recently gave him, and has been showing them off to everyone he sees!
  • My youngest son (now 11) had some money saved a few years ago and asked me to buy stock with it so I did. Last year I told him it was a good time to sell it and we discussed what to buy. He had seen me looking at coins and asked if we could buy a coin with it. So we went in 50/50 on the MS-66 Saint you have seen pics of here. Two weeks ago we emptied 75 lbs of Lincolns on the kitchen table and my boys and I went through them one at a time. They really enjoyed the "hunt". If I had a penny for every time they said "hey Dad, is this anything good?"....oh wait I guess I did have a penny every time they said that image . Both my boys (oldest is soon to be 13) make it a habit to check all their pocket change and their mother's as well for anything "interesting". So far they are on the right track!

Great idea, and sure to make some YN happy.

Lets see ... as for me ... coins for my kids (3 of them), and my my nephew; an ANA YN Membership for my oldest (he shares); I save all the wheats, 40%ers, old nickels and any other oddity (canadians, mexicans) I find and give them out to nieghbors, friends children, etc. in little poly bags throughout the year and at Halloween explaining what they are, where they're from, etc.

So far in addition to my kids and my nephew, I think I've got a few interested. I sure hope so.

  • I will give the coin to a YN who does not have a slab. I am sure the YN would greatly appreciate it. The YN I am talking about is not myself. I have given several coins to friends throughout the past two years. I have given away all of my Indian Head Cents and most of my Wheat Cents.

  • I’m always looking for way I can convert my peers into collectors. I randomly bring coins into school and take them out during class which often attracts a crowd. I let everyone know that coin collecting is fun and informative. I think I’ve made a few YN’s myself.

  • I am a father of 2 and I have been trying to get them into coins for a hobbie. My peeve has been the electronic games....this has gotten them away from the tv and now they (and I ) are learning a lot about the history of US Coins. (anyone know where I can sell off a bunch (3k+) pokemon cards and (2k+) yugioh cards )?
This is a very dumb ass thread. - Laura Sperber - Tuesday January 09, 2007 11:16 AM image

  • I am a YN so if i win I'll keep it or maybe give it to my little sister. Every year i ask a man from a coin club to speak to my homeschool group about coin collecting. He usually brings neat things to pass out. This year I think i'm going to give him some keelbaot nickels I got this summer to give out.

  • My school has a yearly Christmas gift exchange. This year and the two years before I gave away a packet of coins (wheat cents, world coins, old silver coins, a morgan dollar, and an ancient coin) and the person who got the packet last year now has a very nice collection going (of problem-free, raw morgan dollars). If I win, I will hold a drawing and everyone in my school can enter it.

Sorry for the delay ... I was sent to Florida on Thursday to cover Hurricane Frances (I'm a newspaper reporter) and I've been a tad busy the past four days. Returning home tomorrow and I will judge and announce the winners later in the week ... I have not forgotten you.
  • Thank you for the giveaway! Very generous of you.
