What coin would you part with last?

An earlier thread discussed the mega millions Bill Gates has, and did he collect coins. That got me thinking--which of my coins could he not pry out of me, no matter the price offered.

That doesn't imply that the "last one" will not be sold, gifted or otherwise disposed of some day, but which one would be the last to go, at least as of today.

I'll come back in a little while and tell you mine. It is a close call, and I am still deciding.

My 1982-D Washington Half, ANACS MS69. Pop 1 over there, and damn tough to make. It's my signature coin, and it would be the last one out the door.

  • I would have to say my 16-D merc, not because it is my most expensive, but when I was younger, bagging crap at the supermarket it took me the longest to get and I have to say, I spent the most time working to obtain this coin.

  • It would have to be this 1879 - S graded MS66. God only knows why it wasn`t graded MS67. It was a bargin by todays typical retail sales nowadays too ( I bought it 3 years ago ). I consider it my centerpiece of my humble collection and bought it already graded.

Either my 1976P T1 Ike or one of my early Walkers.

Without a doubt it would be this one. Only because no-one would take it.

Kidding aside it is a very interesting question. When I first read it I thought of my 1843-D Quarter Eagle, then many others come to mind. But then I realized what it would be. The last coin I will ever part with is a 1902-O Morgan that I found in my Grandfather's dresser drawer while closing his home after his passing. It is the coin that started it all. I carry it with me in my wallet everywhere I go. It was a pocket piece but the years of wear have taken a toll. Now a G-8. Yep, thats the one, the last to go. The reality is I will likely be buried with it, so it will never go.

My second Barber half I bought for my set. For me it represents the quintessential original look and grade I have come to enjoy in the Barber half series.

That is a tough question but I think the last one I would part with is my 1801 cent, in AG condition. My grandfather gave it to me when I was 8 and was the first coin in my collection.

My 89 IHC, it's graded MS64 by NGC, but it's a deep redish brown proof looking...hmm. I spent a grand today replacing MS64 Morgan commons I had with MS65's...well the wife is upset because I promised to sell off my 64's and 63's but I just can't bring myself to do it.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Okay. It's almost the end of the day(where I am), and I have to decide. It turns out it is not the most expensive, or the rarest of all the coins I have purchased over the last 12 years. But it has a story just like many of yours.

In 1995, I bought a MS 1885 Lib nickel in PCGS 67 from Paul Montgomery at US Coins. He had been mentoring me for 2 years, buying type, ms and proof, but nothing very rare. This coin came in and I freaked out at the price. He explained its rarity, and the coin did speak for itself. So I ponied up several thousand dollars and became the owner of the finest rarest lib nickel( ex 1913). Then I started putting together the complete series in Proof and MS.

Today, including NGC slabbed coins, I am the proud owner of the finest lib nickels in mint state. Don't think I would have done it without the Key.

Bill G, you cannot have my 1885 lib nickel.

It's a toss up between two coins. The first one is a raw 1932 S Quarter in fine that I found in change at a movie theater in 1963. It got me started coin collecting.

The second one is my 1835 Classic Half Cent in PCGS MS 65 RB. I have a number of coins for which I've paid more, but this is a beautiful coin. These are rarely available, and I've never a coin of this type in this grade look as good.

Tough call. Probably the first proof Indian cent I bought. An 1879 PR65RB, 99 and 44/100% red.

  • My 1898-O "Micro O" Barber Half. I believe it is the only one currently known to exist. Sorry, Mr. Gates, you can't have it. Well............ now that I think about it, you CAN have it, but for a price! image

Most Likely it would be my 1901-s Quarter In PCGS-12 "green holder". Took 4 years to locate, but well worth the wait. IMO as well as others, it is the finest Fine in existence. It has the ultimate look of originality, and meets your highest expectation of what a nice circulated baber quarter should look like. It will be the last to go if I decide to sell out.

I thought about this question for a bit and to be honest...I HAVE NO IDEA. I can't pick ONE. I suspect if I had to sell my coins they would all be difficult to give up. image
