Bashing

I was wonderen if all the new comers get bashed. It really seem that there are a lot of guys on here that don't care about coins at all, but just want to bash people. Every time i have misspelled a word or use all capital letters all i get is alot of negitive responce. You guys on here should encourage people not discourage people. Not all coin collector are rich college guys!!!!!!!! If i misspelled anything on this page i'm sorry.

  • You're just going through the standard round of hazing and education all newbies get here. The forum has been around for a long time and all new members go through a period where they are not familiar with some of the established "rules", and as a result they take some ribbing.

Don't take it personally. Sometimes we can be a little harsh. As long as you can contribute in a positive manner and are willing to learn this place is for you!

Unless you're talking about college guys who are going to Harvard on Mummy and Daddy's "old money," "rich" wouldn't be the lifestyle I'd use to describe most college guys I recall. Most of them are out chasing tail or saving their nickels and dimes to buy beer, not coins. image

  • The only people that are getting bashed here are people not collecting coins or doing it in a nonrespectable manner. If you've come here to make fun of coin dealers, that would be a reason to be bashed, if you came here to get free stuff, which I know is happening alot now, you will get bashed. If you've come here to try to trick collectors, you will get totally bashed. Not saying you, but you in general, anyone who will try anything stupid. So, I was accused of being that troll tring to come back on. I still get hacked on occasionally for grammer or misspellings and usually pass it off as a cheap putdown and ignore it. Nowadays, it`s almost a right of passage for new comers to get flamed for the last year or two. Is it right or fair? Sometimes yes, sometimes no as some ask for it for different reasons. So, if your able to make it through the trial of fire without getting too rattled, you`ll be fine.

I will disagree. I have seen lots of newbies welcomed to the boards.

I though, have taken the stance to be more cautious with new members as I like to buy & trade from members. There was a time when I would do this without a second thought in terms of sending out the coins. I have been holding the (empty) bag twice now, & if the member is new I ask that their coins be sent first.

I think members tend to be bashed more on character lately, which is a good thing. Either cleanup your act or get out.......harsh, but more than one has seen his ways & has said they would change. Or 'you screwed up by doing that & now you'll have to (go through with it)'.
I was told that an item I sold & was paid through Paypal WITHOUT insurance that never got to the buyer was my responsibility NOT the buyers....had to give him his money back!

Members here know their sh*t, there are differences in opinions, but if you read the reponces with an open mind, eat some crow once in a while, or just move on, newbies will soon become regular members soon enough.

As for grammar, spelling & using all CAPS or all lower case, I think it is harder to read & harder to understand what the poster is trying to convey.

I am certainly not a rich college guy, barely made it through high school, went to jr. college for 4 years & never got my deploma........dusnt meen eye want too cum off az sum dumie hu dusnt no how two spel ore youz good grammer.

Funny.....you do use the University's logo though!

    rgwill,
Welcome. Nobody knows you, so the way you present yourself online is the way you are perceived. Caps are not good form (unless at the beginning of a sentence). It's harder to read all caps than standard mixed text.

Using pargraph breaks also makes for easier reading on the screen.

Anyone can make an occasional typo, but frequent misspellings do not come across well. Before you click the Reply button, proofread what you write. BTW, they don't teach spelling in college. That's a skill that should have been mastered long before that.

  • Welcome to the boards!

I too felt people were harsh back when I first joined in Sept 2003. I was only on the boards for a month or so then left as I was starting up a business. when I came back a month ago I sat and started reading every post, whether it was a topic that caught my eye or not. As I did this I bagan to see the personalities come out in the posters and I am still learning who is who. I also came to realize that this is kinda of like a text version of a very large coin show. A show where the members are stopping at the same tables and offering their opinions at the same time (and you know what they say about opinions). Imagine sitting at a table and saying "hey look at this coin I just got" and having 14,000 people run up to your table and start telling you what they think! You don't think you will get some differing opinions?

Whenever you get a large group of people together you get such a variety of personalities that it is impossible for everyone to see eye-to-eye. This is even harder with text based conversation as it is hard to distinguish sarcasm and wit from arrogance and stupidity. Until you get to learn someones writing style you can easily take things the wrong way. Believe me, if I were to write here in a manner verbatum to how my personality is in the physical world people would definitely take me the wrong way unless they knew me personally. I am a jokster, sarcastic, very facetious, quick to point out stupidity in the world (here's your sign!) and a very fun loving person who generally means no harm to anyone (unless you piss me off image). People who know me, know that my number one rule when dealing with people outside of business is "Never take me too seriously". But here I have to temper that with the knowledge that what is funny to me may be taken the wrong way by someone else. I can't tell you how many replies I have cancelled after writing them when I realized that someone might not "get it".

I guess that is a long way of saying, don't take it personally, read the posts and note the writers' styles and the responses they get from other veteran posters. this will give you great insight into the man/woman behind the font.

    HAVE FUN!

he doesn't like to bother with the shfit key. even when he says i. it makes one appear uneducated. if its not important to the poster to use normal syntax it is not important i answer.

I just looked at all your posts, and the only thread where I could find any mention of your spelling is here:

    Thread

If that is what you consider bashing, you have a real thin skin. Stick around, there are a lot of Morgan guys here including me. As far as your writing, it will get better with lots of practice posting.

Seriously, what you have seen is very mild compared to some of the flamefeasts we've had here.
  • If that is what you consider bashing, you have a real thin skin.

Not only that, but the original request asked only about a "1902-o mico," and the "vam 3 morgan" didn't appear until after there was a request to clarify the question. Obviously, people were trying to help, not "bash."

The main reason why people get bashed around here is because they gore someone else’s ox. If you come here and write that EVERY crook dealer is crook, I’ll bash you because as a dealer and a collector for 45+ years, I know that statement is false.

If you come on here and start saying that it is impossible to overpay for ANY high grade modern coin I’ll bash, and then the modern promoters will bash me back.

If you come here and sound TOO exuberant about most any classic coin I’ll advise you to calm down. Recent example

So far other areas go, if you express political views on the open forum, you can expect to get bashed almost constantly. image
