Poll....What's the all-time ...BEST... US coin design?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm going to vote for the Buffalo Nickel.
It is an interesting and nice design in EVERY grade. From fresh out of the die to no date or details left, it still has its "essence."

In MY opinion.

Non-political, AMERICAN in the extreme, historic in subject, brilliant in design.

If I had a second choice, it would be the St. Gaudens.

Interesting to see what others think.

I voted for the St. Gaudens, but the $10 design, not the $20.

This seems like a near impossible decision to make.

I had a difficult time with the decisions on the best of each denomination that some sadist posted a week or two back.

Trying to determine what is the best overall seems like you may get a different answer everytime you ask.

Sure, many people say the St. Gaudens design double eagle, but there are just too many really great designs

to make a single choice, at least for me, but then I have attention deficit disorder and can't concentrate on a

single type or series to collect.

The Oregon Commemorative Half.....but I guess you do not consider commems as a US coin design. Therefore,

    Walking Liberty Half.

Wow. No Mercury Dimes (or Winged Liberty if you prefer). I think they should have at least made the list. After all the Roosevelt Dime is there. Oh well, I agree with Russ but would like to toss the Merc in the ring.

Coins that ooze Americana more than any other have to be Fraser's Buffalo nickel and Bela Lyon Pratt's quarter and double eagles. These designs soar above all others in that respect. The most forceful, imposing and impressive of the Liberty designs has to be Gobrecht's no stars Seated Liberty design, specifically the dollar with variable sized stars on the reverse.

My favorite, however, has to be one combination that you do not have specifically listed and that is the Draped Bust obverse with small eagle reverse. Once this design was retired, the Mint would not try to reproduce an ornithologically correct eagle for some years, and even then, only sporadically.

Inkidinkally, I wudda gone with the WL half also except that they look so lousy so soon.
ONE of my reasons for the Buff was how nicely it holds its panache even when worn out.

The St. Gaudens High Relief $20 gold is number one.

Beyond that I like the early gold and early silver.

Buffalo Nickel, front and back, a really neat coin and so small. I also like the Pan Pac gold commem. They don't have to be big to be good.

    You must be kidding?

Draped Bust by far.......when the monster steps out of the forest the suspense is over....your imagination is always better than the truth...but...a little eye ball around the tree with just the hair and the claws visible on the other side with the heavy breathing....makes you want to pee in your pants.

It's like space travel. It's great when we're fantasizing about warp speed but the truth of the matter is space travel is boring. Best to keep the truth just out of reach.

    .....sorry I'm back.

Buffalo nickel gets my vote. Reminds me of the wisdom of America. Push the indigenous (sp?) natives onto the worst land on the continent and make up a theory to permit the crime - call it Manifest Destiny.

Kill all but 100 of the Buffalos .....

Give 'em both immortalization on a nickel...

Actually from a non-sexual non-political vantage point.....it certainly wouldn't be the three cent nickel.....probably the buffalo nickel or the walking liberty half....

I actually love the Gettysburg Half and the Connecticut Half...but if I had to pick just one design....it would be the

    Hawaiian Commemorative.

    Totally cool.

Second place is the One Dollar Educational Note.

Oh...coin....well then second place would be the Oregon half...just the obverse though.

Woops. Went over the two sentance guidline which means 99% stopped after the word "pants".

Actually my favorite coin design is a pattern...the Amazonian Dollar. For real coins, the St Gauden 20.

  • #1. The Buffalo nickel is hands down without a doubt the all time best US coin design.

#2. Barber coinage is a close second.

#3. I love flowing hair coinage and soon will be able to afford some nice pieces!

    #4. Bust coinage.

    #5 St Gaudens.

    #6 Walkers

    #7 Stinky old Morgan dollars.

Since it asks for the best, not most beautiful, I'm going with the Indian/Buffalo Nickel. Evocative of all that is (was) America and stated just so perfectly. They even look good circulated.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!
