  • amazing, the nerve I must have hit with and honest inquiry about postal concerns. I hope guys like you are in shape tom.I can't imagine the kinds if things you probably would not say to people in person if your not. give me a break. There are piles of people who do not insure items and apparently coins is not commonly one of them. That answer would have sufficed. All the out of shape, old fart sarcasm is neither warrented or helpful.I had no intention of pissing people off.

<< <i>Don't get excited. You're replying to an unknown entity who has no profile and makes claims to doing 12 mil in "product" on ebay, probably at a markup which has buried a lot of people and is now whining about other peoples shipping costs. >>

jerk,I have sold 12 million dollars in product over 20 years..not specific to 6 years e-bay has been around. I do not sell coinbs on e-bay am not a coin dealer nor implied such. I do have a large collection of several types of collectibles and do not need a profile for you to ponder while nude. there are tons of guys with money who do not computerize their lives .They simply do not care. this has nothing to do with postage and insurance issues either.

Edited to add: "No flame here, just an attempt at clarifiation as it seems two separate points were being discussed. It was only after I wrote the message below that I read the susequent messages and the tenor of the comments stared getting a little ugly. Remember, this is supposed to be FUN, folks." End edit.

This is fun . . . it is not, however, rocket science.

The Priority boxes are free, yes free, no charge, no outlay, no worries . . . free. There is, however, one small catch. The ONLY way you are allowed to used the boxes legally is for Priority delivery. So, when you use a free Priority mail box to send that 1972-P PCGS-63 dime, you must pay $3.85. The cost to the sender is in the postage, the USPS is kind enough to provide the container for free.

Okay, so you want to use your own boxes, then the cost would be less ONLY if you shipped via first class or parcel post. Otherwise, you add $3.85 on top of the cost of your container.

It is ILLEGAL to turn Priority mail boxes inside out and use them for shipping. Don't believe me, then read the box or ask the USPS. In fact, there was such a rash of people trying to do this at our local post office that if you brought in a box that they suspected was a reversed Priority mail box, they would refuse to ship it unless you openned the box to prove it was not one of their free boxes. I know this because I would recycle UPS and FedEx boxes which are about the same size as some of the larger Priority mail boxes. I finally just would take the box to the counter unsealed and seal it up after they inspected it.

Considering you aren't paying tax on ebay items unless the seller is from your state, I've got little problem paying a higher shipping rate if it is insured and gets here quickly and safely. A large ticket item should have a higher rate anyway. I'd be worried if I paid $1.25 in shipping for a $400 coin.

  • Shipping on Ebay must be one of the most talked about pet peeves. I see this all the time. I've been thinking about giving away my coins on Ebay and just charging for shipping and handling. $10 Coin I would just charge $15 for shipping. $400 coin I could charge $410. $1,500 coin I would give away and only charge $1,500 for shipping and handling. I would even ship that one Priority Overnight Insured.
Hmmmmmm I could save a few bucks on selling fees this way, and everyone gets a free coin.

  • Shipping *and handling* seems to be an often-debated point on this and many other boards. It is not unique to the coin (or card or stamp, etc.) business.

For example, buy a car charger for your cell phone with a buy-it-now price of $3.95- the shipping is often $7-12 with *handling*. Ebay lets the power sellers and frequent sellers do this type of fee avoidance with abandon.

Now, on to thoughts on the subject...

Postal insurance is fixed, as is per-ounce first class shipping. Priority mail kicks in automatically (except for PP, bulk, and media) at 13 ounces - the post office does this irrespective.

Supplies are variable, but (excluding the USPS "free" supplies) do cost money. Where I am, I can't buy *quality* bubble mailers for less than 30 cents each. When I send coins (slabbed or not), I also put them in those semi-sticky coin mailers - they've saved many a slab and coin from a point-blunt impact! Example, a coin that sells for $10 in a slab costs me about .30 (the bubble mailer) + .25 (the coin mailer) +.89 (typical postage) = $1.44 to mail. If it is insured (at the customer's request on cheaper coins) at a minimum, it is at least $1.10 for a total of $2.54. These are facts, there is no "handling", and it is the way it works for me day in and day out. I often times round things up to a few cents more to make it simpler and to allow for the occasional heavy coin.

The real issue is transactions where the charge is $5.00 and the coin arrives in a legal paper envelope for .37, or loose in a bubble envelope with no insurance for $.87 postage. Or those transactions where one pays $10 shipping and handling to purchase some $30 electronic item and it comes loose in a cheap reused box with $1.89 postage. These are places where there is a problem for me personally.

Ultimately, when I'm buying, I take the shipping/handling/insurance fees into account in my bids. If the shipping is reasonable, I bid more. If the shipping can't be reasoned by actual values, I bid much less.

If the item is supposed to be insured, I take into account that the seller may use a private insurer (I do on occasion). If the item arrives, no big deal. If the eBay auction states "insurance" as part of the cost, doesn't arrive, and the seller doesn't make good on it, then I have a problem.

  • this forum is for collectors right? It's not my fault 99% of the responses were from dealers! So much so that Tom thought I was one!

Would it simply make more sense to you if i stated originally that I bought a bunch of $20 coins in the recent p0ast and was charged $5.00 to ship each one???

Is that right? I understand some of the sellers have fixed costs on padded envelopes, insurance et...............but to pay 25% of the item price for shipping is not reasonable. And yes.I said it! card sellers as a genral rule(remember I qualified this as well ) do NOT do this!

My intention, and I mentioned this a few times as well.was not to create issue but get an understanding on why these groups of sellers are so different. I then got attacked and will defend myself with ridiculous humour because I am not an old, conservative and pompous person who has no problem allowing a misunderstanding to go all over the map with me as a target. Really! I know who I answer to and this is not very important to me. I merely asked for info to understand.

Your original post was not about $20 coins and $5 shipping. It was about $300 coins and $5 shipping, and when questioned about if you really thought $5 shipping on a $300 coin was unreasonable, you said yes. So you are changing your story now?

no I am not. I used thr $300 as an example and now realize this is more to the point I should have posted originally. My point is still clear, I do not pay 25% for shipping in any other venue I have used on e-bay. cna you resend the response letter you said you e-mailed this morning? I did not receive it. Well, then I agree with you. When I see $5-6 shipping on a $20 item, I hit the back button. But on a $300 item, $5 would barely cover the insurance.

  • << <i>Shipping *and handling* seems to be an often-debated point on this and many other boards.

I AGREE! THIS IS DISTURBING AND SIMILIAR TO MY ORIGINAL CONCERN!
