Why do coin sellers on E-bay....

as a general rule charge way more to ship coins than other collectible sellers?

I collect baseball cards. real ones- this kind of stuff.

http://www.psacard.com/new_set_registry/display_rsets.chtml?setid=719&set_name=1887 Kimball Champions (N184)

you win a $300 baseball card and it costs $2.25 to get it. You win a $300 prtected in a holder and far more durrable coin and you pay $5.00 !

What is the deal with this? And it is consistant I might add. I have purchased maybe 5000 cards and 500 coins to have a good comparison!

  • It all depends on the seller... the ones that charge around $5, generally ship Priority. As for me, I charge $3, and I ship First-Class Insured...

Are you saying that $5 to ship a $300 coin is unreasonable?
  • 291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,342 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some of them are effectively trying to get the seller to pay their listing fees by inflating the shipping cost. In other cases the high shipping cost is meant to discourage returns...the buyer feeling it is not worth losing postage/insurance both ways. Sellers with high shipping fees are suspect. I avoid them.

If I won anything with a value of $300 and shipping was only $2.25, I'd be worried.

  • That card can't have been insured. Insurance for $300 alone costs more than the $2.25...

I tick some buyers off, but on my auctions I ship only USPS Priority mail with insurance and delivery confirmation, period. On a cheap coin I do this $5 (a loss), on a regular coin I do this for $10 (about break even) and on a real nice coin I don't charge anything for shipping. My auctions say clearly up front exactly what the charge is but I still get buyers trying to haggle me down after the sale. I ship only Priorty because I like the speed of delivery, the sturdiness of the boxes, the availability of shipping supplies (free). Just go to usps.com and theven send you the boxes, tapes, albels etc right to your door for no charge. I have yet to have a problem with delivery or damage. It just kills me when someone pays me $300 for a coin then gripes about a small but fair shipping charge. This is the same type of buyer who wants you to ship it for $1.25 and complains when it comes in damaged.

<< <i>the availability of shipping supplies (free). >>

Hate to break it to you, but for items weighing less than 13 ounces, they are not "free". Lets say you have a slabbed Morgan Dollar. If you sent it in a priority box with no other services, the cost would be $3.85. If you buy your own boxes (mine in the size of the small priority boxes cost 48¢) and mail first class, your cost is $1.67. You are paying $2.18 for that box. As far as delivery times go, I have seen no difference where boxes are concerned.

Huh? The boxes are indeed free. No matter how you look at it. I am not going to keep two different kinds of boxes around. It's Priority boxes only for me. You are right the minimum charge is $3.85, so what? Sometimes people amaze me.... I guess this isn't an issue for me because I don't sell $5.00 coins on eBay. This is why my upcoming auctions will probably all be "shipping included" auctions. I will either have enough confidence in the coin or establish a high enough starting bid.

No they are not free, I just explained to you why. And I use my own boxes even for very expensive coins.

Not all of my auctions reuire insurance or Signature Confirmation but the vast majoirty do. The cost for a typical shipment is:

USPS Priority box shipping (not over one pound) = $3.85
    Add Insurance ($300) = $5.20
    Add Signature Confirmation = $1.80

    Total = $10.85

As far as I am concerend that is a bargain.

That's no bargain. For me, I would charge $7 for a $300 coin.

    Box - .48
    Postage - 1.19
    Insurance - 4.20
    e Delivery Confirmation .13

    Total $6.00 (actual costs)

Now please explain, since we are using a coin valued at $300, how those priority boxes are "free".

(And by the way, you are also paying for all the shady sellers who take priority boxes and turn them inside out to ship first class and media mail)

OK, and it is a rip off! The postal service has the "right" to dispute the value of any item and will not for certain pay it! So why both with insurance on a cheap item. i have my horro story but will post it later for you to understand my point here.

Usually, you are insuring money right? But they can and have disputed the value and have NOT paid the insured amount in many cases. i know,my borther works for the Postal service.

You are a piece of work. First you complain about a reasonable shipping charge, then when I take on someone who high on shipping because they are using unnecessary priority mail, you come to their defense. And I thought I had seen it all.

So, if you bought a $300 item and it was sent priority mail insured, the postage would be $8.05. But you think $5 is unreasonable.

Just wait til it arrives scuffed and scratched by the USPS sorting machine when it jammed in the machine, folded when they stuffed it in

I still want you to explain to me how the priority box is free. You have the package ready to be mailed, in a priority box it is 5 oz. and it costs you $3.85. If you put it in a box that cost you 48¢ and mail it first class, the combined cost of the box and postage is $1.67. Maybe one of these days you guys will figure out that you are paying for that box, not to mention all the boxes that are stolen and used for other purposes.

I charge $4.50 to ship a slab (plus insurance) and still don't make any money on it (eBay and PayPal do)

Yes, the boxes are free from the post office.

But you MUST spend $3.85 in postage to use them.

If you buy a box for $0.48 and spend $1.19 in postage, the total cost is $1.67 for a difference of $2.18

So in order to use the "free" box, you must "spend" an extra $2.18

And the delivery time is the same in most cases.
