it's really bothering me that this coin might be cleaned.

what if it's not "original"?

what if it's "cleaned"?

if it was "cleaned," do you think it has retoned naturally or artificially?

it's really bothering me that it might be "artificial"

what do you think?

    "Is this bust half CLEANED?"

No, it is not half cleaned, it is completely cleaned.image

  • I am far from an expert (actually far from a novice), but it looks suspect for cleaning. Hard to tell from the pics but it looks like hairlines in the field around the eagles head. Then again my glasses could be dirty image

I am not a professional but it does look cleaned. The high parts of the coin are lighter than the rest of the coin. The stars and lettering on the reverse (areas that are hard to reach when cleaning) are darker. Then again I can be totally wrong. I do not know a single thing about this series. I guess I'll wait and learn from what the other board members tell you.

  • The coloring doesn't look right to me either.....my best guess would be cleaned and then retoned ATimage

My guess is cleaned and naturally retoned.

Don't be too hard on the coin. Most bust halves, including many in reputable holders, are not.
  • Nice looking coin but it looks like someone used an eraser on it

Cleaned? In my opinion, yes, but just lightly rubbed, as most Bust halves are. It would not shock me if PCGS slabs it.

    Still a nice coin.

  • I thought it looked like it was cleaned from the picture but I also thought that it is not a bad looking coin.

  • I like the obverse. Unfortunately the reverse looks pretty nasty to me. Those scratches in the field would bother me. Too bad the reverse doesn't look better.

No, that doesn't answer any question, especially with this series. I've seen plenty of bust halves in holders that look like cleaned turds, and plenty raw that look spectacular and original. I find this comment irritating....

The coloring doesn't look right to me either.....my best guess would be cleaned and then retoned AT

What's wrong with the color???? If anything, the color looks some fairly old toning- it's hard to tell about color sometimes with photos, but this toning looks alright to me.
I also don't see all of the scratches that people seem to be seeing with their super-sight..... image I see what look like a couple of light scratches to the left of the eagle's head, and those might be indicative of hairlines from an old cleaning, but one would have to have the coin in hand to determine that. Tough crowd, or just people looking to nitpick. Personally, I would guess that the coin was cleaned a LONG time ago, and has since retoned slowly, and nicely. But I could be wrong too........

I used to collect bust halves years ago so I mighht be able to help. YES, it was cleaned, without a doubt. Looks like it was artificially retoned many years ago(at least 30 or so) and it since has "mellowed" some to make it more appealling. I've had many and a LOT of them have been cleaned over the years but people that just wanted shiny objects in their collection. Usually an original will have a steel grey toning that covers the whole coin, but, they are few and far between. Then there are those with spectacular colored toning because of storage in cabinets with felt or other woods. They are pretty and because of the cabinet friction oyu will have an AU coin that never saw circulation and didn't see much daylight either. Hope that helps. Ray

Baley, would you please blow this image up about 20x it's original size so we can give an accurate "EXPERT" opinion. If it isn't on ebay and blown up I can't evaluate it properly.image

Nice coin, since 99% of these have been cleaned, why do you care?

A classic wiped coin, original toning in recessed areas, lighter on high points and exposed field. A nice coin with a great strike and strong rims, any variety collector would be happy to own this raw coin. Only a fool would waste money on this one for 3P grading.

Baley, I know this coin is really bothering you.....not!

  • Its cleaned. Give it another 25-50 years and it will retone naturally.
