Whose grading service? If it is PCGS or NGC it might be a fair deal, but you would have to see it. If it is from one of the fly by night outfits, you will probably get burned. Unfortunatley even a picture is not a huge help in grading a Proof Barber half dollar.

If it's a PR-60 or an impaired Proof, it's not a good deal. The current bid on the coin in PR-60 is $300 and ugly Proofs are NOT easy to sell. The price goes to $595/$645 bid/ask for PR-63, but if the coin looks decent a dealer would have a hard time finding one for that in this market. So if it's nice $750 is not a really bad collector price.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

100proof1957, there is no way to give specific answers to your questions, without images, or being able to view the coin on a sight-seen basis.

However, generally speaking, if the coin is decent or nice, the price sounds like it is within the expected reasonable/fair range.

Edited to add: After being reminded by Bill Jones' post, I would add that my comments were based upon the presumption that the coin is either in an NGC or PCGS holder.

Pay close attention to hairlines, especially on a large proof coin like that. Take your time looking for Barber Halves in MS or PF 60 or better. Most of the ones I've seen are ugly. If you find a nice one, expect to pay a premium for it; you will not get it for greysheet.

For Barber halves, about 1/2 of the proof mintages remain and there really is no one date that is scarcer from one or another. $750.00 for a proof 63 is about right on for the retail price. It will boil down to eye appeal. You can expect some light hairlines on a 63 for sure, so make sure the coin looks good as some are dark, excessively hairlined or splotchy and unattractive. MS 63 is about as low as you want to go on a proof and not have your stomach turn.

P.S. $750.00 for a proof 63 is probably only worth it if graded by PCGS or NGC and is a true 63
