What do you collect? Type? Series? Unusual Themes?

Do you just buy coins or does your collection have a theme?

Are you a type collector, or collect a date series? More than one?

Is there an unusal theme to your collection?

What do you collect?

I'm a Morgan dollar collector mostly. I started collecting them by date, but I've moved on to trying to collect them by condition. I don't consider the date as much as I consider the luster, toning, grade and eye appeal. My heaviest consideration goes for eye appeal.

For U.S. coins I collect mostly type coins. I have collected date and mint series sets in the past, but I became rather bored with that. I like variety. The only sets I have left are Lincoln cents (from my childhood), Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes and Indian $2.50 gold pieces.

I also collect political tokens, especially 19th century presidential campaign medalets and tokens, and Civil War and Hard Times tokens with political slogans and themes. I also collected New England Civil War and sutler tokens when I lived there, and I collect merchant Civil War tokens with great or unusually crude die work that interests me.

Years ago I completed a set of the Comitia Americana medals purchasing the earliest strikings of each medal that I could find. I collected the copper medals, which were struck from the original dies (when I could get them) for medals that the American Congress awarded to Revolutionary War heros. The orginal medals were struck in gold or silver. I still purchase other medals now and then when they strike my fancy.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm generally a type collector. I buy nice looking coins. As I wait to find another nice coin, I work on a series. Right now, I am working on the bust halves.

I also am working on a type set of elongated coins from the 1893 Columbian expo.
  • Good morning, coin gods. I collect key dates, gold coins and aviation related pieces. I seem to ease off the coins in the summer months, but come fall and winter, I'm right in there. I only purchase about 2-3 coins a year, $5,000. is my budget.image

  • Well.... I collect capped bust half dimes that are VF-XF(problem-free), PCGS graded roosies that are MS-63 or better.(I know thats dumb). EC's, all kinds, whatever is out there. I also collect ancients, but im not too serious about them, I don't purchase too many. To add to that I collect a nice amout of world coins that people give me from their trips. Thats about it. When I get the two main ones done, im gonna move on to something else, not sure what though. Oh yeah I forgot, im filling up a type set too.image

MS63/64 Morgans by date & mm...until they become too expensive.
Currently have about 40% of the series in MS.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Currently working on the 12-piece gold type set (this is where 90% of my coin budget goes). Once complete, hope to expand into the other affordable (i.e. after 1834) gold type coins.
Also putting together a type set in the Dansco 7070 - no gold here though (this is where the remaining 10% goes).

Currently working on Draped Bust Dimes. Need to fill 3 more holes (1801, 1802, 1804) to have a COMPLETE (date/MM) dime set from 1796 to 1964, but still collecting some varieties and upgrading some, too.

Also, collecting various type coins as they catch my eye.

I collect just about every coin, token and medal yet still there is a theme of sorts. Most everything
directly or indirectly involves transportation; coins and tokens used for bus or train fare, automotive
manufacterers, and even railroad and steel producers. While I look for just about anything new, it's
the transportation themed items which are actively sought.

I am putting together a Peace Dollar set in the higest grade I can afford for each year/mm, and I also just started a low grade Buffalo set to try and get my daughter intrested. I gave her the Redbook and told her to pick out the coin she liked the best (no gold) and I would start a set for her. I also collect State Quarters.

Collecting Peace Dollars and Modern Crap.

Dollar type. Gold, silver and the gold commems and modern commems(7th best on the registry). I'll never finish so I added the Alaskian, Hawaiian, Bechtler, Lesher and Phillipine Pesos. I like vf an xf in older type and au55/58 in gold commems(pretty hard to find). The idea of people back in the old days having their paws on my coins gives them the history I want.
  • I collect Buffalo nickels and Pre WWI silver proofs and mint state coins with original great toning and eye appeal.

1827 capped bust halves. I am currently in the process of trying to get an entire die set for the year. There are 47 varieties for the year--more than any other.
Only lack Overton 127 (R-5++), 137 (high R6), and O-148 and 149 ( both R-7) It's not going to happen (short of either winning the lottery ( and Oklahoma doesn't HAVE a lottery!) or getting VERY lucky underneath a cherry tree) but I can dream. image

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
