TCC, will your article confirm or dispel the concerns raised here? -- All 3 cards pulled in CA. Same auction format. Same hand is holding the cards, as Roach said. I think the story will help explain who the seller of card #3 is rather well. That should help address some of the concerns/theories raised here. Bottom line is that I don't think there is any connection between this seller and the other 2 cards - be it seller, buyer, etc.
At this time, I don't plan to go into the general issue of all 3 cards showing up in CA. To me, that is a separate story and one that requires different research. To properly do that story, you have to "trace" the 3 cards as much as you can to determine how the ended up with each of the sellers. I have alot of that information, but not enough yet to do a story.
By the way, I should have a link to the story on this card late tonight.

Very nice story Bob, well done. Glad to see a "collector" actually pulled that card and got so excited. Not to mention he's gonna make a small fortune. Good for him, I just wish it had been in my case.

I think the guy sounds like a jacka--. 90% will enrich his family's life and 10% back to cards, way to pass along your good fortune buddy. Could at least throw 5% towards a charity or something. And if he thinks that card is gonna be worth 4 times more than what he will get for it in the years to come, he doesn't really know jack about cards. Next year Upper Deck is gonna make the next hot card with the next hot rookie and that cards value is gonna go down faster than next years Lakers playoff hopes! I guess its his card, he just comes off as greedy to me!
Bob, very nice article. Thanks for sharing the link with us.

Indeed an interesting and well-written piece. It doesn't address the points made by some members here, but this person clearly is real and is not Valley Auctions. I wonder two things:
Since all 3 of these cards were pulled in California, will people in the East still want to pay big bucks for these packs? Will they figure only dealers located close to UD get the biggies, so take a pass on the packs and instead just buy the cards they want on eBay?
What happens to the value of this latest hot card if Upper Deck puts out a 1/1 LeBron/Shaq next month? And then Lebron/Jabbar the month after that? They're all 1/1. Are all they all worth $100,000 with value that will "triple or quadruple" in 10 years? I guess I'm just not meant to understand the modern market.
Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone. In general, there just are not enough good articles about the hobby anymore. Or even bad ones for that matter. Most of the industry publications have increasingly lost "real" content and are just filled with ads, etc. But, I think there are still plenty of collectors out there that enjoy a good article now and then and seeing the discussion they create makes it enjoyable. If anyone else ever wants to put their thoughts together on a topic (this could open a can of worms - I can only imagine a few of the proposed topics), just let me know and we can put it on our site as well.

True, I did not explicitly address these comments in the story since the average reader would have no idea why I was making a point of something like the guy's hand or bringing in the seller of the previous patch cards.
However, the thought was that the story as written would provide enough of the picture and story that such concerns would no longer exist.
Here are some additional comments and thoughts though based on my research...
1. "The Hand" - If you compare the fingers seen in the image of the collector with the card to the hand/fingers shown in the eBay image, I think you'll see that the hands match. In addition, I spoke with someone at The Strike Zone when preparing the article. One of the things that came up during our discussion is whether he was comfortable with whether this was legitimate since the card was not actually pulled in the store or brought into the store to be shown. The man's comment was that he knows Mr. Macias and that the hand in the image that was shown to him and on eBay is Mr. Macias'. So, I guess there are others out there that use someone's hands as an ID method.
2. "The BuyerID" - If you look at the eBay feedback for Mr. Macias by clicking here, you can see a history of buying (mainly) and selling a number of small-dollar items. To me, this feedback does not look like a "dummy account" that someone like Valley Auctions has set up and is using as a BuyerID. It looks simply like a collector who looks for inexpensive autograph cards.

Well since it's up to 180k now, I guess the 10% he gets to spend on his hobby just tripled too. If I were him though, I would've ditched that reserve. 180k is about 18x more than what it should be worth, he should sell to the high bidder...
Still almost 7 whole days to go as well. I would think it's getting close to the reserve at this point since the previous Buy It Now was $300,000.
Here's another bit of info for everyone (some will really enjoy this):
The guy from Valley Auctions has been sending nasty e-mails to this seller about the way his auction is being handled and indicating that such high-dollar auctions need to be handled by "professionals". Professional what is the question?

I think it is total BS what people are doing to his auction, each time someone pulls this crap, the value of it can only decrease....and 2323, why do you give a flying dung what he chooses do with the money, is it any of your business? I, for one, am happy for this guy. He looks to be an average joe who struck gold, and all you can do is insult him? I don't think anyone here would donate any of the money they got off this card to charity, get a life. I stopped posting on this site for this reason alone, morons like you and joestalin who can't keep their pie-holes shut. I've been fortunate enough in the 3 years that I collected to pull 2 nice cards in which a-hole eBayers chose to f up my auctions. They were a 00-01 UD Jordan Game Jersey Patch Auto #15/23 and a 02-03 SPX Yao Ming Auto Jersey Spectrum RC #09/23, so I feel this guys frustration. I no longer collect, but read many topics here on this forum, I think it's the best one CU has...With the exception of a very few members, you guys are are some of the most knowledgeable/courteous people in the hobby I know....

What business does Valley Auctions have with someone selling his own card?
Like the poster above, I am glad that the card went to an average guy with a regular job, instead of a high-volume California dealer or multimillionaire.
Hey sportscard geek, if you have no morals or ethics why do you care what I said about him. And actually yes, I would give some of that money to charity. Him having the reserve that high alone proves this guys greed. I honestly don't even see what is so special about that card, other than its a 1/1, big deal, ton's of 1/1's out there now. Not worth that kind of coin. He's just begging for people to mess with his auction with a reserve like that. Nobody is gonna take this guy seriously, except for you! Why do you even care if you don't collect cards.

Actually, what makes you think that he won't donate any of the money as well? Part of the 90% may very well go to helping out part of what he considers to be his extended family - the teens he works with. Many would consider that charitable giving.
The reserve was set as high as it was because he actually was not sure that he wanted to get rid of the card. We can debate back and forth about selling or holding on to these 1-of-1 modern cards and what value they will or will not keep over time, but there is some level of uncertainty about what will happen with some of the "key" cards from this group of modern cards and some collectors, including this seller, feel that these will continue to have a high value. Like I said, that's a continuing debate here and will continue to be.
As the seller properly described in the story, cards (like everything else) are worth what someone is willing to pay for them - plain and simple. If someone out there wants to spend over $300,000 on this card (maybe even just for the publicity), then more power to them.

pandrews, so you think the high bidder of this auction is legit? If that were so why wouldn't he just BIN and be done with it, last I checked it was at $300,099.00. he could have owned that card for less already if he really wanted! When the card was relisted the 2nd time, no Buy It Now price was set in order to avoid the same problem that stopped the first auction (too easy for someone to play around and stop an auction). Instead, he set the reserve equal to his original Buy It Now price of $300,000.

<< <i>And actually yes, I would give some of that money to charity. Him having the reserve that high alone proves this guys greed. I honestly don't even see what is so special about that card, other than its a 1/1, big deal, ton's of 1/1's out there now. Not worth that kind of coin. He's just begging for people to mess with his auction with a reserve like that. >>

<< <i>Hey sportscard geek, if you have no morals or ethics why do you care what I said about him. And actually yes, I would give some of that money to charity. Not worth that kind of coin. He's just begging for people to mess with his auction with a reserve like that. Nobody is gonna take this guy seriously, except for you! Why do you even care if you don't collect cards. >>
good for you.. actually, no.. good for sportscardguy (except i like Joe Stalin).. this guy has the right to set his reserve at whatever he wants... btw - if somebody pays $300,000, THEN ITS WORTH $300,000!
you say he's "just begging people" to mess with his auction? let me tell you, ANYBODY who messes with ANY legitimate auction, is deserving of a .45 caliber bullet in the kneecap..
<< <i>I know it would be a tough decision for me if I were thinking of purchasing this card, "hmm, lets see, buy a house or buy this basketball card", tough call! >>
I imagine that it's safe to assume that anyone that has $300,000 to spend on a basketball card, already has a house.

lol.. yeah, but 2323 would buy a house and give it to orphans..
<< <i>I actually don't care what he does with the money, I'm just saying the article kinda made him sound greedy, maybe I was the only one. I shouldn't judge him, it's his card and whatever he chooses to do with it is his business. and sportscardguy, I'm sorry for calling you a geek! >>
Ok, not a problem. If he came across that way in the article, that just means I need to work more on my writing skills. Honestly, I think this guy is pretty genuine and just in the middle of something really big. I also agree with you though that there is still alot that still needs to happen over the next 1-2 weeks before this results in a true sale at this amount. It will be interesting to watch.

<< <i>so you think the high bidder of this auction is legit? If that were so why wouldn't he just BIN and be done with it, last I checked it was at $300,099.00. he could have owned that card for less already if he really wanted! >>
When the card was relisted the 2nd time, no Buy It Now price was set in order to avoid the same problem that stopped the first auction (too easy for someone to play around and stop an auction). Instead, he set the reserve equal to his original Buy It Now price of $300,000.

<< <i>pandrews, so you think the high bidder of this auction is legit? >>
i dunno, if not, he deserves to be shot.

it was a reserve, not a BIN.. somebody SCREWED the guys original BIN..
<< <i> And if you really want to shoot someone over an auction maybe you should think of some kind of counseling. >>
yep.. anybody who would screw with $300,000 of mine or my families, is deserving of multiple bullets in multiple body parts..
<< <i>Heck, who knows, Valley Auction could be the one trying to ruin this auction. Not saying he is, but if he is that mad at the current seller, then maybe if this sellers auctions get ruined enough, he will say forget it and allow Valley Auction to sell it for him. >>
Why would he need to do that? $300,000 > $27,000 + $62,000.

i wouldnt doubt it.. if thats the case, a beat-down contract should be placed on him..
I still dabble here and there, but nothing worth mentioning... And as for you stating that I should not be allowed to have an opinion regarding this card/auction....That is humorous in it's own right...
