Wow! Has anyone else gotten the ANR Oliver Jung Collection catalog?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,375 ✭✭✭✭✭
There aren't a lot of lots (107), but WOW! Every coin has a nice write-up with a color photograph (no color plates) of both halves. The coins themselves, too, are stunning, and the catalog layout is incredibly pleasing to the eye.

More kudos to ANR! image

Dumb question. What is the difference between a photograph and a plate?

Excellent collection and a job well done by ANR

  • Plates are merely a group of pages in the catalog, usually in the beginning of color photos of the highlight coins of the sale. The ANR catalog did all the coins in color through the entire catalog so no plates were needed.

Didn't get the catalog but I browsed the lots online. Heck of a collection! Interesting that there's not a single Morgan.

Of the ones I saw, the only coin I didn't like was the 1942-S Washington quarter.

I was fortunate to have been able to view the sale a number of weeks ago while at a show. To my eyes, it is THE best collection (coin for coin and coin for the assigned grade) that I have ever seen. Other than that, I have nothing good to say about it.image

received today too indeed and quick glance confirms this weekend will NOT be drool-free. The collection is small and super.....truly must admit ANR team has it really put together once again. A masterful job, makes you want to go and bid on every lot in the book image

That's how I felt - until I saw the opening bids. image Not that the coins don't merit them!

Stunning catalog - best I've seen.

Plus I noticed that Oliver Jung credits Joe O'Connor in his intro as being his dealer of choice. Good for Mr. O'Connor - thats a nice ad for one's services.
  • Kranky, interesting point about opening bids. I know of quite a few of these he is selling, and ALL have opening bids over what he paid for them with juice.

For example. Lot 7, the Sheldon cent, PCGS MS66RB, he bought for $103,500 in November 2001 Heritage Sig sale. Now opening bid for this coin $108,000. Jung is not going to sell a thing unless he makes money on it. Of course this is obvious business move, (I know), but so many coins are coming out to sell in this hot market in all auctions. I have been slowly selling a couple of mine, and what I have gotten as a sale price, is unbelievable in just two years holding them for some. How high will it go??? Interesting catalog to make note of on how this market is. He sells all of them, MARKET IS STILL HOT.

Watch Bowers and Merena Jim Clay sale (Baltimore July 8,9th)... Watch the "three big dogs": The unique 1870-s half dime, 1873-cc NA dime, and 1853-O NA Half Dollar. For example, the Half Dollar sold for $161,000 in Sept 2002, and now the reserve is AT LEAST $200,000 WITH JUICE!!!!!!! (I just bid it to where it is now (smile). Opened at $135K, but that was just an open). If it sells, not a bad return in LESS THAN TWO YEARS. Just interesting to make note of...Big dogs are SELLING. If he sells ANY OF THE THREE, making money...

I had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Jung about 18 months ago...

I called/emailed him to discuss purchasing the classic head 2.5$ and 5$ gold pieces that are now in the sale... He offered them at high prices... but in retrospect they would have been a bargain compared to what they will most likely bring in auction... image

He is an interesting guy. Also, unless he sold some stuff privately, this is not all of his collection. He had at the time, multiple stella's, which, if I recall were one of his favorite designs...

Notice that there are none in the sale... image

    John

Edited to add... he also has many duplicates of coins... hard to believe... but true...

This catalog rocks. It reads a lot like the "100 greatest coins" book, lots of eye candy and engaging descriptions to boot.

David Bowers will be shocked at what I am about to write here:

Seeing this catalogue on the internet was nice indeed.

However, when I received it in the mail, I looked at it and was stunned. Why?

For the first time in 40 years, I saw an auction catalogue in which I actually and seriously thought of my coin collection being sold in the same manner and in fact, being happy to see it in such a catalogue while not owning my coins anymore.

WOW WOW WOW. I read it last night. The photos, descriptions and other QDB copy was the best ever. ANR is really setting a standard for the entire numismatics field. What a magnificent achievement! If you don't have one, order one for your library.

I can't imagine how high the bidding is going to go on some of those coins. It might be a real test of whether or not the market is finally cooling down a bit, but, this one ought to get all the big dogs off the porch and into the race for sure.image

The catalogue is a keeper! But they made a few mistakes. They included several lots that I can actually afford!

I think the only way I can get anything out of the collection is to visit the place in Portugal where the three shepherds saw Nossa Senhora de Fátima and then on to Santiago de Compostela to complete the pilgrimage!

I had a mild panic attack when I read here, that there were some hefty "minimum bids". image However, for the lots I bid on, at least, in almost every case, the required minimums were well below what I was willing to bid.image
