What did you do on this Memorial Day?

RNCHSNRNCHSN Posts: 2,609 ✭✭✭
After sleeping all morning, I spent the afternoon in the back yard working in the gardens with my kids. It just started to rain, so we're back inside now.

My mother in-law is up visiting and made a VERY good fried pork-chop dinner.

To make it coin related, I'll own up to lining the gardens with back issues of Coin World before laying out the mulch.

Went through the stash and picked out the coins that will be cracked out so PCGS can have another shot at getting it right.

My Army reserve band played for the Memorial Day ceremonies at the West Los Angeles National Cemetery. It means not being able to sleep in on Memorial Day, but it's still a very nice, well-organized event.

Governor Arnold was scheduled to be there, but didn't make it. Not the best way to score points with veterans. image

Being active duty USN myself, I worked about a half-day providing armed escort for one of our Trident subs while she was on the surface taking Midshipmen aboard. Once complete, I enjoyed a great round of golf with a good friend and then had a nice lunch.

Speaking of Memorial Day, did anyone catch the 60 minutes tribute to the fallen in Iraq last night? It was nice....not overdone.....they showed a photo of all 838 Americans to lose their lives in defense of our country.....God rest their souls.

I worked most of the morning. The afternoon I did some weed eating on my lot in between working. I'm going back to do some more work soon.

Took part in my home town's Memorial Day ceremonies marching with other vets in the paradeimage It is a very small town with flag lined streets, small fire and police dept. The scene looked just like the old movies and small town America. It was outstanding!!!

Then I just hung around all dayimage

It just started to rain, so we're back inside now.

you forgot to mention its cold here, so I went outside to save my eggplants and bring them in (potted) only to find someone stole all the bikes from behind my apartment off the bike rack, except for mine and a new girl that moved in, and that was only because i locked mine to the thick pole on the end as the new girl did also...but mine wouldve been in the middle had there been a space as I always figured that was the safest place image

glad some jerk proved me wrong, but now theres some seriously pretty women here without transportation image

and my better half won't let me ride em..oops i mean give em a ride image

  • Got up early and ran (jogged) in the Memorial Day 5K race in University City (an old suburb of St. Louis). It was a lot of fun and had several hundred people. My pace was very pokey, but I believe I did manage to beat a few little kids. image

Later we took our bikes down to Forest Park (our big central park) and cruised around for a couple of hours. Heard some music, saw some gardens, watched some baby ducks, large turtles, lots of people watching, etc etc. A nice day.

Just so this is coin related: I gave my friends some hockey-stick nickels and some Florida quarters.

    And thanks to the vets!
  • I was thankful for all our service men and women - past, present, and future. I was thankful for having the home, family, and job that I am lucky enough to have.

I also gave blood today at the Red Cross (my 41st pint) - I took my 12-year-old son with me so he could see what it is all about... we had a good time together.

I didn't do any coin stuff today... I've been really busy lately.
  • i slept in and got arrows for my bow.

Had some friends over for a BBQ. It was cool and rainy, so no swimming or eating outside, but good for the seeds I planted in the veggie garden yesterday.

I watched my youngest son while my wife and mother in law took my eldest (3 1/2 yrs old) to see shrek2. I washed dishes, vaccumed, washed, dried, folded the clothes, watched city slickers, took my kids to the park, went and got some dish-detergent, got some sonic powerade slushes for the family, and am currently telling you all what my boring day consisted of. image

We spent 3 full days clearing about 1.5 acres of our woods along east fenceline - and then picking off the ticks, and utilized our new Billy Goat brush mowezrzz - my keyzboard is mezssing zup zand inzsezrting Z's!!!! oh no!

We lit a candle for my Father, a Navy vet - who passed away ON Memorial Day 2002(and Grandfather an Army vet) - and all the other soldiers who have died for our country. We BBQ'd a LOT of meat, and hubby put it in the oven to keep it warm and TURNED ON THE OVEN - and it melted everything - all ruined and almost burned house down - so had to eat out. So had to spend a couple hrs. airing house, and cleaning up burned pans and mess, melted plastic in oven Crap - not I gotta cook dinner the rest of wk. AGH. Lost a weeks worth of food.

Coin related - I got my shipment in from the mint and have it hidden in drawer to explor tomorrow!

Sunday I took the family to LegoLand, then yesterday went and toured the Dachau concentration camp. That was something that really embraces the meaning of Memorial Day.

Sunday paid a visit to Ft. Richardson, site of the local military cemetary, and helped honor those brave soldiers and veterans including my dad buried there. Seeing the rows of flags at each gravesite was inspiring and cause for reflection and gratitude. Today, Memorial Day, enjoyed an extended family picnic.
  • Memorial Day was a day to get back in touch with family. I wish I had more time with them.
  • I went to the Garden Centre and then packed up Ebay orders so that they can be posted when the Post Office opens.

Worked outside all weekend. First one since Easter that we had two days of sun in a row without rain.

Thought about all the folks that died for our country and how fortunate I was to be able to do something as mundane as planting flowers around my flagpole. Thought about my dad who was in WWII, in the Navy, for the duration, and then Korea. Thought about my uncle who at age 40-something enlisted in the
Army and spent WWII in North Africa and then Europe. Thought about all those coffins lined up each morning from 1968 to 1969, ready to bring someone's son or father, or brother home to our country. They paid the ultimate sacrifice and that's what I think the holiday is all about.

Watched "Ike" last night and thought Tom Selleck did a terrific job portraying Gen Ike.

Also set aside some time to fool around with my coin pursuits.
