The PCGS price guide shows $825 for a 1951-S Wash-Carv in pcgs ms66, is that a typical retail price for this coin? Could someone give the the GreySheet bid and ask for this coin?

Thanks,

    The Gray Sheet bid/ask for the 1951 Washington - Carver PDS set in MS-66 was $ 1,660 / $ 1,810. That's for three coins.

Most Washington Carver coins that I see have ugly marks on the portraits which make them less than desirable. I suppose a really clean coin is scarce, but I've met few collectors who would do handsprings over these coins.

Bill, I found a 1951-S Wash-Carv pcgs ms66 for $641 and after seeing the PCGS price guide thought it might be a real bargin. The coin has a real nice white obverse, but a few specks and light print on the reverse. But I guess it is about in line with the greysheet ask for the three coin set. Thanks for the info.

Charlie-- $641 is not a real bargain. It's about typical retail for these coins. What people ask retail for these though (like most coins) is all over the map. I see them on eBay with starting prices as high as $1000. They usually don't sell. --I am talking about 66 graded S mint Carvers, or the 52P.

Clankeye, this has been my experience with these coins. They do not sell well for me. The main people who have bought them from me fall into two categories. The first are type collectors who looking for an example to fill the hole in their sets. The second are African-Americans who took an interest in the coin because it is one of few U.S. coins that have one or more Black Americans depicted on them.

I really find this coin interesting because the McCarthy era slogans that were first proposed for the reverse. They stated that funds from the sale of these pieces would to used "to fight the spread of Communism among American Negroes." The State Department complained about that wording and as a result you see the comments about Americanism.

What do you want me to do Clankeye? Shut up and be quiet, or join some chorus and lie about how well the Washington-Carver coins sell for me. Occasionally I do remain quiet unless somebody calls me out. As for lying, well I leave that to others.

If you can sell these coins by the roll, good for you! I can’t, and when I do sell them it’s usually at low prices relative to the retail price guides.

First of all it's "Clankeye" not "Crankeye" and if the misprint is intentional then we don't have anything to talk about.

As far as your comment above--I don't worry about the selling of these coins in rolls or otherwise. I'm a collector--not a dealer.

Sorry about getting you name wrong, Clankeye. It was unintended.

As a collector I like these coins because of their history. As a dealer I've not done well with them. So from a financial perspective I am not a fan. Being a collector and running a business can run in different directions.

Thanks for letting me know, Bill.

All is well. I certainly am not looking to mix it up over Carvers. If I came on too strong with the "dissing" comment, my apologies.

You see though, I'm a fan. And I root for the home team. Even if they do happen to be huge underdogs. image
