How many of you could see the steps of a Jefferson nickel with the naked eye?

With all the interest with full step nickels, I was thinking, how many of you could see the steps of a Jefferson nickel with the naked eye? not many I do not think, then why it is so popular?imageimage

    I could when I was 10.

Not a prayer now at 48!
    When in doubt, don't.

I can almost see enough of the steps to tell me if I should pull out the loupe.

  • I'm 16 and no I cannot. In fact I cannot see any of the steps with my naked eyes in ordinary light. I cannot see all of the steps (almost though) with my 10x loupe.

I doubt anyone could see the full steps on a nickel with their naked eyes. It's alot harder than you may think. The steps are very, very fine. Try it!

LUCY!!! That kind of behavior is NOT playing fair!

Please do some more of it.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I'm with Russ, I can tell if it is worth a closer look with the old loupe

I can guess at it with the naked eye, but I use a 5x glass if I want to be sure.

I still can at 30. But I still use a 5x to spot check, especially where two might merge a little.

I can see the steps on a nickel without a loupe - never had much problem with it. Oh...and I'm thirtysomething.

I can also see the steps without a glass, I pull the glass only when I think that it may be a close call. It must be noted though that I do wear glasses (not just reading glasses).

    Is this full step?

It is tough to tell sometimes, it is not that I cannot see it, sometimes I am just not sure even with a glass.

Have to bring out the microscope a lot of times.image

2 1/2 years ago, I had Lasik done so I could see distant objects without glasses. The trade-off is that now I need reading glasses.

I now enjoy 20/18 in my left and 20/20 in my right. I did it so I could see a golf ball at 250+ yds down the fairway w/o glasses. Its almost as if the further away something is, the clearer it is.

If I want to see the steps on a Jeff, thats why they invented the loupe!

Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
  • I could up until 12:00:01 AM August 13, 1999, thats the day I turned 40, now I just ask 18 to 25 year old females if there are any steps on the nickel, or what steps, oh nevah mind.image

With my glasses I can tell if the coin is well struck or not and see if it's nearly
full step or not. If close than an 8X glass is usually enough to tell.

Most Jeffersons of many dates are not often well-struck. The FS designation
helps to separate the typical from the choice.

Many people can usually spot FS without magnification.

Sometimes, in the right light, but, generally, not for several decades now (and they weren't recognizing FS nickels back then).

  • I can quickly ID the Jeffs that don't make it with no aids. If it looks like Full Steps then I pull out the loupe to check for any nicks or bridges. I am over 40 and do require glasses to see at a distance.

I think I did not word this correctly. What I was trying to said was:

The nickels with no steps are easy to see but the ones with perfect steps are the ones that eludes me.image

I can tell if there are steps, thus when I need a loupe. I then use a 6x loupe for the final determination and to tell if there are tags/nicks, etc. I am progressively going blind, however, and the situation worstens noticably over time.

I have this 1988P that I can't see the steps on for the strangest of reasons..............................
TJ's on the reverse also!! I found it at work. It's a pretty sweet fake. If they had used 2 nickels with the same date instead of a 1988P and a 1986P, and managed to keep the rim raised on the reverse instead of incuse it would've been better. But if you look at it quick, it looks real.

I think I may be able to see full steps with the naked eye. I'm so nearsighted that if I look over the top of my glasses and hold a coin about 1" away then it looks magnified. In fact, I went to a new coin shop today and the owner let me pick through some 2X2's of uncirculated nickels and I think I found 4 that MAY be full step. At home with a magnifying lens, they still look like they MAY be full step. I say MAY because I am not sure what all is required for full steps designation and one has a nick on the steps, one has a few tiny green spots on another part of the coin and the third has the steps getting a little bit weaker on the left side. The fourth one looks really good, even under magnification. I may try and take pics if I can get any decent ones that actually show the steps and get some of your opinions.

If I take my glasses OFF I can see the steps, but I would not trust my step count to be accurate without using a loupe.(six inch distance) With my glases ON I can also see the steps, but only with the coin a good foot and a half away and at that distance I can't count steps.

  • I can. 22 years old and have a sharp trained eye.
