Ya know, PCGS has a fanstastic marketing tool with their very own U.S. Coin Forum. Where would you expect to find the core of a target market for a new slab idea? Of course: a chat room about coins and slabs! All that they had to do was post a thread entitled. "What do you think of our idea about a Jessica Lynch slab? Yes or No?"
So far, I have only found 1 or 2 people within this thread willing to purchase one of the Lynch slabs. Really, really bad idea.
All service men and women should be honored every day in our hearts and minds............not with a cheap piece of plastic.
I being a VN veteran with 2 PH's and a CMH would just like to say they should have certified a SAE for all the vets that served in Iraq rather than single out one individual. This is just capitalizing for monetary purposes plain and simple.

I agree completely, koynkeywest. But in PCGS's defense, they've never said it was about anything but the money....the money...the money...the money. You have to give them credit for tacitly acknowledging that. As a journalist, I only resent that they haven't come up with a Daniel Pearl slab. Wait a min. folks. I thought it was a very good rehab technique for the young lady. Ever lay in a hosp. for a long long time after that kind of ordeal??
I spent 36 years total as a supervisor of psychiatric units for the State of Calif. as well as 9th med. battalion for 10 months in Vietnam and on top of that 3 Months laying in a hosp. bed recovering from wounds.

The problem is Pearl's not around to sign 10,000 labels. Still they might be able to autopen it by tracing one of his signatures. ZIf you really feel that strongly about it you need to talk to Folkartnut since he is the driving force (and maker of most of the profit if any) behind almost all of the signature slabs. PCGS doesn't come up with these things on their own, they do it for compensation from individuals or companies. Pay them enough and you can get a slab label with what you want on it.
Signature slabs do seem to have faded and perhaps that is the fate of FirstStrike someday. I don't think they even sell for any significant premium.
I think the signature slabs that the designer of the coin signs are pretty cool! I only have the Bicentennial Quarter slab, signed by reverse designer Jack L. Ahr. I've also seen signature slabbed Sacagaweas (Goodacre) and State quarters (including some from forum member Daniel Carr).
Celebrity signed ones don't do anything for me. I like it to be related to the coin.

I saw the JL slab 3 or 4 years ago, and thought it seemed like a misstep for PCGS -- I think they must have thought so as well, since they have not repeated it.

Does PCGS certify those popular novelty Arkansas "Head Quarters" or "Close Quarters" with Clinton on the reverse, behind a tree?
(edit: not Jessica Lynch- just all the hoopla.)
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
