Hmmm. "Media whores" Hmmm. Lets think about this... Do you think she asked to be made a walking media frenzy? I don't think so and I doubt you do either.
Did she capitalize on her celebrity? Of course. What I would like to know is who doesn't these days?
Will you call Elizabeth Smart a media whore when she comes out with her book?

I also feel that this whole idea is ridiculous, but I don't think there is any need to personally attack Jessica Lynch. She was injured while serving her country and was a POW. I detect a hint of misogynistic cr*p in some of these threads. Do we consider Vietnam POWs to be less heroic because they were POWs? I don't think so.
I see that many of you are serviceman and clearly seem to have some "issues" with women in the military. Take it somewhere else. This is the US Coin Forum.
This whole collection is a dumb idea because this person has nothing to do with the coins. I can see mint directors, I can even see the WTC Ground Zero recovery coins as having a numismatic "tie in".
Edited to add: Prepared for flaming... >>
As a 22 year member of the armed forces I am insulted that you could even begin to think Jessica Lynch has not sold her sole for doing nothing more being captured. It's not a man/woman thing, knowing what she did, nothing, she should have sank back into the West Virginia hills and not embarrassed herself/the military service. Has this whole country gone nuts?
BTW, if this had been a man my disdain would have been doubled!
At the risk of being expelled from this forum-I'm surprised that a company of this magnitude would prostitute themselves like this. I thought such gimmicks were the sole property of lesser regarded slabbing companies. I guess I was wrong.

Yes you were. But, I knew I was right all along.
BTW, here is the definition of HERO: a person admired for his or her bravery, courage, great deeds, or noble qualities. I looked in the dictionary and can't find Jessica Lynch in it. Maybe PCGS publishes its own dictionary.
Hey Ray - Your Iraqi bill would mean a lot more to me than Jessica's coin.
I, too, agree with the majority. I wouldn't touch this and can't believe there are 100K people who would buy this. And it's not a woman thing. Let's celebrate some real women heroes.

Try as I might to refrain from getting involved, my fingers seem to be typing of its on will...
I understand what ealandg is saying. I think she is correct in noting a bit of misogynistic attitude in this thread. Certainly not from every male military poster, but also certainly a little of it... And, I think this attitude is irrelevent to why the bulk of us find the JL signature slabs unsavory.
I think we can eliminate the gender issues if we simply referred to Pvt Lynch as "Pat Lynch" instead of "Jessica Lynch". Moreover, do we really know the real story of "Pat Lynch" since that person's return to friendly hands? I am somewhat under the impression that Pvt Lynch was pushed into a limelight posterchild PC situation by both the Pentagon and the media. I am under the impression that Lynch would have preferred to avoid this "hero's attention". Basically, I am saying that I opt to refrain from judging the Pvt because I don't know the full and real story.
Finally, please count me in with the crowd who are uncomfortable with the "Pat Lynch" signature slabs. I hope that a *significant* %-age of the proceeds go to her foundation.
An addendum to my previous comment-it ain't Jessica's fault these coins have been slabbed, is it?
Furthermore, this seems to have become a place for some members to promote their religious and/or political views, often to the exclusion of coin issues, with their various personal icons and literary quotes. If I wanted to view political/religious matters, I would go to the appropriate website for these things. I hear enough of this crap in everyday life, and come here to escape by discussing COINS and coin related matters, but to no avail.
This marketing strategy makes me puke for reasons other than it may hurt the value of my pcgs investment, can't believe DH agreed to this-----------------------BigE
I wonder how many Jessica Lynch PCGS bullion coins Les and Sue Fox will try to sell on eBay this year, knowing the market for these slabs will soon die.
I'd rather buy a WTC death slab or an overpriced PCGS US 1976 coin with Gerald Ford's signature before I buy this one (unless I can get one for spot silver price).
Who's the bigger "media whore", Jessica Lynch for agreeing to get paid for doing this, or PCGS offering to pay her for it? PCGS will probably survive this for years after their media darling soldier fades away.
However, I'd gladly buy a slabbed 1969 proof coin signed by Tiny Tim at the posted CU price levels. His "15 minutes of fame" was at least 15 years before slabbing took off, and at least 30 years before slabbers sunk to such shenaningans to make instant collectibles aimed at feeble-minded impulse buyers.

ccex-who would have ever thought such a thing would bring big bucks? And, who knows what his signature looks like? Maybe we could get ACG or someone to pull a fast one here.
I have a feeling that these Jessica Lynch slabs are not meant for the coin collector but for the mostly non coin-collector who might have a passing interest in owning a silver coin and picking up an autograph.
It is still quite possible that these slabs might sell fairly quickly, if priced reasonably enough. Hopefully, there will be a nice significant contribution to the Charitable fund to help other soldiers and their families.
What is wrong with some variety. I would think the low population levels would add to the value.
I'm not an advocate of the slab or anything but if PCGS wants to try something different thats a good thing.
I'm sure any of you would accept if PCGS approached you and said, "hey you have 5,000 posts on the board, you are special. Please sign a select number of slabs for collectors."
I'm waiting for when they have someone from NASCAR do it, yeah thats the big ticket.
Folks, I'm in the marketing field and if PCGS has any sense at all, they did market research to see what demand exists for a coin like this. Otherwise, they would test it with a couple thousand and limit their risk. My bet is that these find their way to.... Coin Vault.

<< <i>... she should have sank back into the West Virginia hills and not embarrassed herself/the military service. Has this whole country gone nuts? ...
I agree that she should have faded back into obscurity. There are many more deserving of the recognition than Jessica Lynch. I served 9+ years on active duty with the United States Air Force, served many years in the reserves and I am now a Department of the Army civilian serving with many of "America's Finest" in Korea. I also have a 23 year old son in the 25th Infantry who will be deploying to Afghanistan this month. I have no desire to defame Jessica Lynch's service. She served our country and deserves our heartfelt thanks for her sacrifices. However, the issuance of these coins singling her out as an "American Hero" is repugnant to me. It demeans those who have performed truely heroic deeds by honoring one whose actions under fire, can at best be considered mediocre. I sincerely hope PCGS will reconsider their plans to issue this coin. I will never consider purchasing one.
(the spellchecker would not let me spell his name correctly, insert ck) >>
Carlos Hathco*k Now there is was a man that was the most celebrated and respected Snipers during the Vietnam war....... Carlos was from a small town in Arkansas and he definately would be worthy of recognition on a slab, are on the obverse of a coin in my opinion!
Unfortunately Carlos died a couple of years back before he reached the age of 50..... This was definately a "true" hero that I doubt many on these boards ever even heard of with the exception of "ElectricEye" and myself and possibly other Vietnam vets.
<< <i>ccex-who would have ever thought such a thing would bring big bucks? And, who knows what his signature looks like? Maybe we could get ACG or someone to pull a fast one here. >>
I admit I proposed slabbed 1969 coins with Tiny Tim's signatuture. Unfortunately, Tiny Tim is dead, and ACG is moribund. (I do have his signature in my Grandma's Reader's Digest songbook from when I was his pianist for a one-nighter in Oberlin, Ohio in 1981, so I may even be able to declare certain alleged Tiny Tim signatures countrfeit!) Jessica Lynch and PCGS are very much in the limelight now, and will probably eclipse the sales of Tiny Tim memorabilia for several years to come.

If all the funds being made from this, are going to just causes, like setting college trusts for the kids that lost a parent over seas, or emergency relief for those spouses waiting for the red tape to clear before receiving deceased spousal benefits. Then I think this an excellent program and would purchase a few.
However if the proceeds are just going to line a few greedy peoples pocket as a personnel gain, then I think this is wrong.
Using ones celebratory status to help others, I think would be very honorable. Jessica being probably the most recognizable name to most households of all the soldiers during this campaign would make sense to use her picture, regardless of the actual events as of to why she is well known.
I just wish we knew if the proceeds were going to a just cause, and until I find out, I will refuse to purchase, yet until I find out that they are not, then I will refrain from slamming this as well.
Mr Peso, That is an excellant Iraqi note, One that I or any U.S. citizen would be honored to have in their collection. FRame it, trust me in years to come when you go and look at it it will bring nothing but great memories. After I got out of the service, a little over 10 years ago, I was left with jaded feelings and memories towards the service for way to long. Those feelings are just now starting to go away, and I can look at the pictures and medals, and see many of the happy times, that I had with a group of great men, instead of focusing on my feelings loneliness, fright, and boredom that are a part of many servicemens/womens normal day to day feelings. Thank you for sharing that with us
I think it is in poor taste trying to profit off of a event that occured during a war. No disrepect indended to Ms. Lynch, however, in my opinion she is a survivor, the real heros are the Armed forces troops that saved her. I would rather have a 1943 cents with the signature of a Omaha beach survivor/hero than that junk.
I'm not interested in "celebrity signature" slabs to begin with, so I'm not the target audience, but if I ever want a memento I'll let MrPaseo sign mine.
PCGS sells a service, not a product, so I wouldn't be too upset if they slabbed meadow muffins as long as they attached a dna identifier to prove it authentic and unaltered (and got the grade right). Most people seem to mistake C/U for a coin company, when in fact they're a authentication/certification service. They simply have a large footprint in our area of interest. We'd all do well to focus on our coins, because there really is no product/brand that has value beyond the coin to a coin collector. If you're focused on the coins, the slab is incidental, and whether the service is endorsed, promotes its service on TV, involves celebrities, or gives away samples in Cherrios boxes, it isn't the plastic that's the prize.

Agree or disagree with Ms. Lynch; I believe she was left crippled for life by her service to our country. I'll buy a slab to salute her if nothing else.
I like Fox News. Besides the foxes on there, they report on items you'll never see on the mainstream network TV. You know, the newsreaders like Brokaw/Jennings/Rather.
First thanks to Chiefbob, JimC, Pat, Ray and the others who served...and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. As for the complaints about the 'hint of misogynistic cr*p in some of these threads', those posters have a better understanding of the phrase 'war is hell' then you ever will. If one considers our military made hand grenades lighter/smaller during the 90's because 70% of the female recruits couldn't lob one out of the blast zone, or the fact that a real hero like Stanley Arthur (who earned 'an extraordinary 11 Distinguished Flying Crosses while flying more than 500 combat missions in Vietnam') was denied the Pacific command because of PC cr*p then you might understand their point of view. Of course, if you only read Salon and listen to NPR then...... -mark-
All I see is negative responses for a woman doing her job. Good grief folks, she was brutally raped and almost lost her life. How many volunteers here to do her job? I spent 6 years in the Marines, cut her some slack, she DESERVES it. OR lighten up a bit. I bet she'd trade her experience for your cushy arse cushion if she could. Why is she not entitled to a little fame when Americans are ALWAYS called upon in a peace keeping/big brother role. This topic should be elsewhere.
OK, so what if you people don't want the slabs. If they sell, they have value to somebody else. Let them have what they want and congrats to PCGS. If they don't sell, the coins get cracked. What's the big deal?
