I'm getting tired of these clowns. If you have to have a certain price for something, start it at that. Putting up a "no reserve" auction and pulling it with a few seconds left is .
<< <i>Were there any bids on this? If so can a seller close an auction that close to the end? I didn't know they could. >>
If there are no bids, and in this case there were none, the auction can be cancelled anytime. There is no reason why a seller should leave himself at the mercy of the snipers and sharpshooters.
<< <i> If there are no bids, and in this case there were none, the auction can be cancelled anytime. There is no reason why a seller should leave himself at the mercy of the snipers and sharpshooters. >>
Just my two cents, but if you don't put a reserve you should have to deal with what is handed to you. That's the chane you take. For every auction I've seen where a seller has lost their @** there's been an auction where the dealer has done quite well. That's the business. Ifyou don't have the guts or brains to use ebay's tools then they should have to live and learn.
I believe you're right. I think I saw this auction just an hour ago. I was looking to see what '98 mattes were going for nowdays and happened to see this auction.
When I first read this and scanned the auction, I thought Russ was being unreasonable. I'm sure he wouldn't want to sell one of his great high-grade Kennedys for a tiny fraction of its value, I thought.
I didn't see, at first, that there were several hundred dollars of bids on the coin. With last second snipes, who knows what the final value would have been. It sounds like bids were in a reasonable range, compared to the going rate for this coin.
I wasn't bidding on this coin, but this situation has happened to me on one occasion. It is really annoying. Not only that, but it is completely against the whole spirit of the auction "concept."
This kind of bid cancellation/auction cancellation is so transparent, it's pathetic. It's dishonorable, at least in my opinion. Very cheesy. He can keep his coins.
This subject comes up all the time. I agree it's low when they cancel these at the last minute or anytime. I also feel it should go on their feedback record just like if a bidder retracts their bid.
Now having said this.... I've seen upstanding members of the board cancel auctions like this and never seen folks calling them weasels and scumbags.

I have been on eBay for a long with many positive feedback and I too find this despicable. Ebay has reserve auctions to protect your bidding? Investment?
Seller should have used it. I agree with Russ---GUTLESS
I wish ebay had seller blocking along with bidder blocking.
There are so many around that do this it is hard to keep track of sellers you don't want to bid their auctions.
<< <i>but if you don't put a reserve you should have to deal with what is handed to you >>
There would be more reserve auctions if ebay hadn't restructured their reserve fee system so they can make WAY more money. Not really as relavent with a $300 or so reserve as it would be with a $3000 reserve though.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
I'm wondering what's up around here. First people think that keyword spamming isn't a problem, and now reserve fee avoidance isn't a problem. I guess rules and TOS only apply to certain people. What this guy did was a violation of eBay's policies, and if he does it enough, they will come down on him. Personally, I think he is a sleazy seller since now he has the same item up at a fixed price of $329, which according to Russ is about $70 over the going price for these.
I think this is bad also. The bidder is warned we are entering into a contract by bidding. I have also seen a high end high volume forum member called on the carpet for this very same thing.
I agree that this is just plain wrong. I have pretty much always listed by auctions at what the minimum I want or just a tad under, in hope of a bidding frenzy, or just go with $1 start if I think I will do okay, but like Russ said, sometimes you gamble at $1...sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss, but just take the lumps and move on.
I also hate it when sellers say "so get it now before it gets away, and bid strong to assure victory..!!!" ...for some reason that just rubs me the wrong way.

<< <i>Isn't $245 a fair price for one of these? >>
Based on recent market, pretty close. I was going to lay in a snipe at $260, which has been the recent average selling price.

Technically true. He's still a gutless weasel, though.

Of course I wouldn't want to, but when I run a no reserve auction, (which I always do), and lose my ass, (which I sometimes do), I just take my lumps.
