Hello Everyone,
I was always interested in silver commemoratives. Now I'm planning to buy one next month, a Washington carver 50 cent in PCGS ms64. Is that a good buy for a first time commemorative buyer??
Another thing, please show some nice commemoratives. I'm still not sure if I should buy a few...

The Carver-Washington is a good first buy, especially if the men commemorated have some personal meaning to you. You may also want to look at a Pilgrim, Stone Moutain, or Columbian -- any of these is relatively inexpensive in 64, and much prettier than the C-W, IMHO.

Commemoratives are a great series to collect. That may be a somewhat biased opinion as I am a commem collector. Lots of history and politics involved for each coin in the series. Carver - Washington is a good place to begin. Inexpensive up to MS65 and many to choose from. The key to success in collecting commemoratives is to take your time. Unlike a traditional series where once you know the coin you are able to apply your knowledge to each date, commems have to be studied coin by coin. Each commem is a series of one. Good luck and enjoy.
Here's a nice example of a Carver-Wahington.
Here is a 51-P Carver commem NGC64. It was under $20.
Yes, the Carvers are a nice little series, with some very low mintage dates. In 64 there isn't one date you shouldn't be able to find for $60 or under. The common 52-P's are very cheap.
I think you would find them an excellent introduction to classic commem collecting.

Booker T. Washingtons are also relatively inexpensive and a nice beginners coin.

I invite you to visit the two websites below. Rob's U. S. coins has a 50 piece collection "The Overland Trail " with pictures and information on classic U.S Silver and Gold commems. The second link goes to Overland Trail Collection in PCGS Registry Set.

The coin I might want to buy is washington-carver 1951-D in PCGS ms64. It has a very low mintage, and I prefer that.....

A 51-D Carver would be a nice choice. Mintage of 10,003--the D mint Carvers are tougher coins to find with eye appeal. A lot of them have dull luster. Below is a pic of a 51-D PCGS64. I picked it up because the luster was above average for the issue, with some nice light gold toning.
Good luck with the commemoratives.

Highly recommend Dave Bowers book "Commemorative Coins of the United States". A bit dated on
pricing info, but loaded with good stuff on all the Classic Commems (1892-1954).
Some are like the WC, with a very slight price curve from MS63-64-65; others, like the Sesqui
go through the roof in these grades.
Best of luck with your commems !!
