OK, I'm posting a liteside coin here DAMMIT

Just let me say in my defense that I know that US coins are of the darkside specie for many of you that visit this noble forum.

I posted this coin on the liteside and my thread sank like a rock for three reasons: 1) it's not a Morgan Dollar; 2) They're busy arguing about PayPal fees; and 3) I have neither insulted anyone nor insinuated that anyone has perpetuated or thought of perpetuating or even dreamed of perpetuating a fraud upon some fragile numismatist or the body of numismatists as a whole.

Now that I've apologized, here it is: a first-year-of-issue nickel three cent piece, NGC MS63, which I just received today. This is a beautiful addition to my US type set - it has lovely gentle toning and a great deal of luster (that is of course completely corrupted by my lousy scanner.)

Well, now that I've gone off on a rant, somebody on the liteside just bumped my thread to the top.

Isn't this just about one of the first nickel (actually, cu-ni) coins ever produced? I know the first Indian cents were also cu-ni but a different alloy and color. Did any other countries use this alloy back then? Methinks not.

    That's a neat coin, John.

I'll trade you a Carver commem for it.

Isn't it nice to have one foot in the dark and one in the light?

Hmmmm. that's an interesting question, Jester. I'll have to go do some research.

Or was the wise old sage of numismatics asking a rhetorical question?

  • Jester, could be the first CU coinage. I think the Brits first issue was that Jamaica 1/2d proof of 1869. They made a few test coins on the Victoria 1/2d's in 1868.

    Who, ME!?!? Surely you jest.

I just got to thinking about it and I can't come up with an earlier example, or even another example for 40 years.

Spinaker, you're right about the Jamaican half penny. But is the composition the same? Every one I've seen is definitely more coppr-colored. And the 3 and later 5 cent "nickels" of America are definitely the typical white color.

    Nope.

  • Jester. I think those Jamacian issues were near the same composition. Neither Peck nor Krause states what it was. I do have later date Jamaican 1/2d's that are "white". The one you got from me is flat white until tilted in the lite. image

Heck, I'll bet the Darkside could give the lightside a run for their money with their own coins but on our turf. I like seeing the occasional Lightside coin here as it comes without the baggage that would accompany it on the other forum.

Nicer three cent, JohnZimage. I, too, bought one of these not too long ago. Same grade even (except mine is ANACS instead of NGC). I always though three cent nickels were underrated:

But I started with an apology!

At any rate, 100 posts is a bit optomistic to say the least.

Besides, we have it on no less authority than Chet Krause & Cliff Mishler that U.S. coins are indeed "world" coins (25 pages in the image 30th Ed.

Which is impressive considering nickel wasn't isolated in "modern" times until 1751.

I forget the country but I believe the first "modern" nickel alloy coins were struck around 1820. There were one and three cent tokens struck here in the US in 1837.
