Guess who wrote me an email today?

I received a wonderful email, to be followed up by snail mail, from Gunter Kienast. As many of you know, or don't know, Mr. Kienast is the author of the only two reference books regarding Karl Goetz medals. Mr. Kienast is 80 years old now and he is very gracious and cordial.

I had written to him in hopes that I could do an oral history with him regarding his visits to Germany, and Guido Goetz, Karl's son. All of this information is to eventually be placed on my website, www.KarlGoetz.com. Perhaps my largest request to him was to ask if I could digitally recreate his reference books on the website with updated images and information as it becomes available from other researchers. I was shocked to see that he granted me the rights to do so...do you know what this means for the web site.... For the collector and information sharing for Goetz collecting in general? A digital refence site will assist many collectors throughout the world! I am in awe that he was so gracious to immediately give me permission!

As a tidbit for the site, Mr. Kienast will be sending me information never published regarding five of Goetz's medals. He wants this information to be used as enticement for collectors to visit the site!!

Now I have my work cut out for me in the creation of a viable and informative website.

What an opportunity! I hope you will use this forum as something of a sounding board for this significant work-to-be and work in progress.

Mrs Roberts is very impressed - she thought we were just a bunch of miserable, disfunctional deadbeats, with little cause for existence. She is of course partially correct..... image

Amazing opportunity! Great job and congratulations. Do you know if Mr. Kienast visits the Darkside?

as stated in his email " I have been completely out of touch with the medal world and market for decades now, and must admit, it does not hold the power over me now it once did." so in a nutshell, no, he doesn't visit the Darkside. I need to have further discussions with him to enable me to design the website. As many of you who have websites know, you can't blindly just begin throwing together a web site without a plan. I do know that I could at least begin transcribing the books to a digital word document as a start. This isn't going to be an overnight project.....

I was wondering, is his permission enough? Do you not also need the publisher's permission also to copy the book?

It appears that the original publisher is no longer in existence...I will, however, ask Mr. Kienast about it when I reply to his email. Thanks, S
