    That's a sample slab?

How can you tell the second one is a sample slab?

    Just curious.
  • That PCI slab is really RARE! Only one other has been on ebay and brought a similiar price (we even had a thread here on it then).

    From my website:

<< <i>This PCI sample slab pre-dates the following sample slabs and is rare. Only one of this type has been offered on ebay in the last two years and it made a record price for a sample slab, brininging in over $150.00! The slab is like PCI's normal photo-slab and has the word "sample" below the coin type. "-0" appears instead of the grade. I estimate less than a dozen exist today, but there could be more out there. This type is definately one to look for in junk boxes and dealers inventory. >>

I'm seeing a 1839 RE half in EF40, and it doesn't look like any sample.

Thank you for fixing bad link.

Kicker is that I think I paid about $10 for it out of a cheap box
  • Goes to show just like I say on my website they are out there and this is even a type someone can "cherrypick". Some people might laugh, but a $147 cherrypick isn't bad at all.image

I saw more than that at an 8 table local show Saturday. Dealers had them in the same box with the free dateless Buffalos and lolipops for the kids.

You saw more than 8 of the samples? We aren't talking the normal PCI slabs here.

  • Sadysta1,

If you look you'll see that I was the underbidder on the first pair of NGC's, and I would have bid higher if the holograms on the reverse weren't torn up.

As for the PCI sample, that is a new record for a sample slab. The previous record was $154 for the other PCI sample like that one that Cameron refers to on his website. And I was the winner on it when I beat out Cameron by a small margin. There have been three sales of sample slabs over the $150 level so far, plus a couple of losing bids in the $150 range. Sample slabs are becoming a serious area of collecting. A couple years ago typical prices for them on eBay was $5 or less. Now except for the most common ones, they've tripled or more. There used to be just a couple people chasing them, now there are a couple dozen regular, serious bidders.

I think ebay should have a new section in coins for sample slabs!

Boy, I remember picking up two of those sample PCI slabs at $12 each almost 4 years ago on ebay.

I seem to remember a lot more than 8 of those were made (probably closer to 30-50) but believe many were broken up.
