    I don't ponder.
  • Absolutely not. They're ugly.

...and they come in all kinds of weird metals like .925 silver and aluminum.
Many of them aren't even round and can have oddly shaped holes in them.
Worst of all there is so little demand that even scarce old coins often sell
    for a few dollars.

  • I'm considering starting a Cuban "ABC" peso series run. They were made of the same specs as peace dollars, they were made at Philadelphia, and they have a very definite "Art Deco" look to them.

  • I'm getting there. I have a few foreign coins and those Franklin Mint Proof sets which are about $10-15 a pop. No one country or series in particular, just whatever looks interesting and pretty. I'm interested in coins from the UK.

The fact that the Krause's catalogs cost over $50.00 for each century. image

But really, it's mostly just trying to learn about UK coinage and finding the era that appeals to me the most.

I think about it, but I'm already spread too thin with my current collecting goals. Going international would just bust me. With unlimited time and money, I'd be all over it.

Cladking you mentioned the low demand...how about the upper pricey pieces? are more historical pieces carry a premium as much as US market?are there many private collections in tight hands waiting for demand change? I just slabbed my first foreign coins so interestingimage
For an american buyer is there much a competetion factor from collectors inside each country? and finally Yes I do ask too many questions?

Not until I saw this one, then I looked at the price and nixed the whole idea.

There is an awful lot to learn and a lifetime may not be enough.

A few year old Krause can be picked up for a few dollars. They don't really go out of date.

  • I have been a lightside collector all my life. I could never find a connection with other nations coinage, and thus never put much thought into collecting it. So I'm about as lightside as one could get.

This week I have started to collect non-US coins. In specific Euros.

There were a lot of reasons. The biggest one was financial. Cash has gotten tight for a number of reasons, and it's going to be a bit before I can get back to my Liberty Nickels and Quarter Eagle Indians. I just don't have the scratch to comfortably buy right now.

But I love coins, and I like to collect and organize. So I started to cast about for something to work on.

It had to be cheep. I also like high grades. I want to see the details on my coins.

That doesn't leave much on the lightside. All the modern issues outside of the Jefferson Nickel don't do zip for me. And as my Jeff set is pretty much up to date, there simply was not anything I wanted to go after.

    So what to do?

A few nights back I had insomnia and was surfing the forum, and out of curiosity I decided to look for info on the Euro. I'd never seen one of the things and I wanted to find a image. Over on the Darkside I found a lot of posts that helped me out, and I killed most of the night reading.

And I liked what I found. 12 nations 8 coins a year each (We'll put aside the micro-nations and Germany's multiple mints for a sec) Cool designs on a lot of them. The majority are very inexpensive to get with some trading, or finding a contact, and the rest are fairly affordable. Complicated enough to keep me busy for a long time, challenging in many ways. And artistically pretty in most cases (Yah some like are not that thrilling, but most are) just what I was looking for!

I was able to buy a lot of 32 of them on eBay for about $30 plus some shipping. The last time I was able to buy coins for under a $1 a pop I was in junior high. It blows me away. :-)

So I'm having fun. Still feeding my collecting desires, and learning too, and not busting any budgets.

I also remember my father putting together a sets of Mexican Pesos and Francs when I was young, that he donated to a club at some point. So it amuses me that I'm doing the same sort of thing he did. Feels sort of nice.

  • The only money that I've collected from other countries was what I had left over in my pockets after my trips... Nothing special... The kids like to look through that box (about a pound) from time to time (it keeps them away from the coins they aren't allowed to touch)...

I'm ashamed to say I've strayed into Canadian & Mexican material two or three times. But not for long.

I've been 100% clean for 7 years now. One day at a time, baby.
