  • Ajaan, I agree. I find the color to be too much.
  • Very colorful and if it were completely by chance or accident then it might be desirable. But artificial toning has ruined the legitimacy of these colorful coins and has created an artificial, and probably temporary, inflated market for them. Didn't this fad start when some collector/tourist-oriented island governments started marketing colored/enameled coins? Then the entrepreneurs decided that they could colorize their own coins and make huge profits off them. This is like tie-dye for coins, a passing fad, it won't go away but it will eventually fade.

I do like it, however with tbirde's comments noted and agreed with.

Such toning should command a (small) premium. The insane premiums being paid (particularly on Liteside coins like Morgan dollars) have unfortunately created a bubble that is bound to shrink in time, if not completely burst. Nice toning should and will always command a premium, but it'll be a cold day you-know-where before I personally pay much more than, say, ten percent or so.

  • I do like it, but would hesitate on paying a large premium for toning without seeing it in person. The Florin I bought looked natural that I got at FUN, and I did not pay a premium.

How can you really be sure it's AT???

    Seller answers AT criticism here.

" I make a business of trying to locate the most beautiful and funky looking coins available but I try my best to make sure that most are in "the big three" holders. Even then if I suspect a coin is questionable I will say I don't make um I just sell um. My point is if PCGS or NGC call these coins "real" who am I to argue. I can assure you I am not a coin doctor!

It probably is not that vibrant in person. I like original coins and color is a plus but the prices for certain color is not a game I what to play...too much at stake.

I think it's noteworthy that, according to his own testimony, Greattoning will sell the coin regardless of whether or not it's AT or not, as long as it's in a top-3 TPG slab. He makes no claims to not be selling AT coins. So apparantly the main theme is buy the plastic, not the coin. Apparantly, that's a successful business strategy.

I echo Coinkat's reservations on paying strong premiums for colored coins. In my opinion, there's too much at stake, specifically due to the prevalence of AT on coins in the market, despite TPGs' efforts to not slab AT coins. What bothers me most about this is that I suspect very many nice coins are being altered in order to acquire some of that very marketable and lucrative "toning" that people are paying gobs of money for.

Not all "monster", "rainbow" ,(or whatever they're called ) toned coins carry a premium.I bought this Japanese 50 sen for way below its JNDA value, even less than Krause's unc price, although it's obviously a BU. My icon is also such a coin, but it cost me less than a blast white gem example of the same date that was sold at around the same time.

I don't think that colorfull toned coins is a fashion trend that will go away. It's not a novelty and some collectors (including myself) have been looking for them for years. It's up to the collectors that like them, to decide if the coin is worth a premium or not and how much it should be if any. And it's certainly unfair to compare them with modern NCLT coins in colour .

I'm with ajaan on this one though. It's weird to see electric colours on a George II 1750 sixpence.

Attractively toned coins will always be in demand. Paying insane, stupid money for toned coins is a bubble that is bound to burst, though.

The scammers, coin cookers, and hype artists will see to that. Then they'll find a new fad to follow.

I agree with tbirde's post completely. It seems that over the last year or two people are forgeting what artificial toning is. There is a reason that all the incredible toners have been coming out of the dark the last few years. So many threads on the U.S. forum scream AT to me, but nonethless are now accepted as "Natural."

I agree with Syracusian that nice NATURALLY toned coins have and always will be sought after, and carry a premium among collectors. I eagerly seek out such coins, and pay strong money for them, as do other collectors. The premium for such coins may be 2-3 times normal value (of an untoned example). However, I must reiterate that this applies to naturally toned coins only. Let me add that I've been in Europe for 7 years and I've NEVER ever seen coins anywhere for sale that are AT. AT coins don't exist over here, yet. I hope it stays that way. However, and sadly, I can't say the same for many coins I see for sale on ebay, including many of those sold by Greattoning. Whether or not he's the doctor doesn't make any difference to me. What I'm calling attention to, and lamenting, is the obvious presence of AT coins on the market, and the aggressive production and sale of them. This makes me highly suspicious of any wildly-toned coins for sale in America, as well as on ebay.
