It's a 113a, with the die flaw to the right of the 5 in the date.

I figured that that die flaw is a key diagnostic. I forgot to say before, but it appears to be a very nice coin from the image. Congrats!

JBsteven beat me to it. I have a flowing hair dollar that looks like similar wear and I'd say based on its grade yours is an F12. (The grading services are a little more generous with these classic pieces.)

a total newbie here on flowing hair, couldnt understand why denomination not on design and went to the Redbook saying on the edge with decorations but no pic. Kind of curious now what the edge looks like so if you crack it out for your album or maybe even a link to a picimage

Congrats on an excellent addition. I think it is either VG10 or F12.

Now that is a damnnn fine Flowing hair half. I would say VG10 and with a very nice contrasting original toning to boot. I have been looking for a nice VG10 or F12 half just like yours for a couple of years now. They are not easy to find nice like that.

  • Ya should have bought it 25 years ago, they ain't that scarce. Even two years ago would have saved you a bundle.
  • I have one in VG08 (NGC). Yours looks a little better than mine, so I'll say F12 or F15.

As a total newbie -- your words -- please tell us how we all knew that the coin was a half dollar and not some other silver denomination.

Duh! Maybe 'cause the 1st post said grade this half dollar??
  • Complete Newbie here, and I figured it out, other than the fact that Baley said it was a Half Dollar, which I think was the point EVP was trying to make I guess... anyways, the difference is in the placement of the bottom curl... on the Dollar, the bottom curl is in between Star 7 and 8 (If one counts the stars from left to right, top to bottom) where as on the Half, the bottom curl is above the 8th star... image Took me a bit of comparing between the Red Book pics and the posted Pics... image

The coin is in an ANACS VG8 holder, for now. I will crack it out in the next week or so, and post pictures of the edge lettering, before it finds a semi-permanent home in the Whitman album (where it will stay for the next couple of decades, if all goes well...). I agree with the VG8 grade for this piece, it does have claims to VG10 based on details, nice full rims, denticles and lettering, and nice original looking dark toning with lighter highpoints, positive overall eye appeal. It loses a little for an apparently very old and light scratch across the neck and a couple small marks, so VG9 might be about right, and in fact, that's what she cost (slight premium above Vg8 price for the original look as well as a slightly better variety, the 113a listed in Overton as a R4 (probably more like R3) and with the added interest of the A in STATES recut over an E, serifs of the E clearly visible. Thanks for your comments everyone, and as always, post your coins of this type!

agentjim, Ya should have bought it 25 years ago

dood, 25 years ago I was an 11 year old kid. The coin is listed in my Redbook at $550, a number that exceeds the entire value of my collection at that time. There was no way I could have afforded it then. Thanks though!

my main criterion, other than less than a thousand dollars, was that it looked "never scrubbed"

Put me in the F12 camp. The wear is even as is the color. Nice coin. Looking for one myself to go with the 1795 Dollar.

I didn't notice that Baley had already identified the coin's denomination.

JrG, yes, it was my intent to be instructional. I think it's a good thing for people who are interested in the FH type to be able to easily visually distinguish a great deal.

Baley let me give you a belated Congratulations on this acquisition. And thanks for the link. After going to play at the San Jose show yesterday (Saturday) I had to pay for that opportunity last night and all day today in sweat.image

Looks like a nice piece, with some nice looking dirt. Couldn't see the denticles when I looked but I'm sure there is some nice looking dirt there as well. When I started my interest in early halves, of course it was the flowing hair that sparked me. You beat me too acquiring one.... But you've been waiting longer than me so I'd like tip my hat to you if I did indeed wear one. Enjoy!!!!

Thanks everyone, and thanks stman for killing my thread (again) image Looking forward to seeing what you got at the show, knowing you it's probably pretty nice. Anyway, yep, plenty of dirt in all the right places on this piece, and a nice overall appearance for a VG. Paid fairly strong money, at $860, but again, I really really needed one that hadn't been "warshed off" and "scrubbed nice and shiney" (in fact, I also didn't want one "with an old cleaning, now starting to retone" such as the VG i linked. Anyway..

AS ALWAYS, POST YOUR COINS OF THIS TYPE! I'd be very interested in seeing other specimens.
