How much $ do collectors here spend per year on their collections?

I spent about $1200.00 last year on coins .What do some of you guys spend on coins? I`m really trying to manage my money so I have even more for coins because they will last a lifetime.

Back when I was "pure" collector before I became a dealer, my coin buget was in the $10 to $15 thousand range per year. Now, well it depends upon what I can afford and what I happen to see in the course of business. My demands for coins and tokens are pretty focused these days to a limited number of items.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Last year was my first year collecting and I dropped about $3,000 in total. I'd like to spend much more and get lots of COINS image this year but I can't until I get a frickin' job!

I would say it was about 8k - 10K last year. with about half of that from sold coins recycled back into new ones.

  • I spent a few thousand last year.

I make sure that I invest for my retirement each month, though, before I spend anything on coins.

Selling is harder because I don't have the heart to let the coins go!image Too much of an "emotional" investment.

I spent about what I sold.

This is fun. I can slab a 2003 quarter, sell it, and buy an AU58 Bust or Seated Half with the proceeds!

I am suprised that so many people think spending more than 50,000 a year on coins is alot, even though I don't come close
to that level there are thousands of collectors that do just think about the FUN show and auctions 30 million in auction alone
takes some deep pockets to get to those numbers. I would think that there are at least a couple dozen lukers or active people
on this board alone that spend over 6 figures a year on coins both for enjoyment and investment, but are afraid to post
that they spend that much. Just look at the coins that are shown here in other threads.

Part of what I like about this place is that I can be around real collectors both high dollar people and people like me that try
to put together ciculated sets. I find it real enjoyable to listen to stories from shows and read about people that are movers
    and shakers in the industry.

Depend on the stock market performance, I spent much more in 1998, 1999 and 2003 compared to year 2000-2002. Last year, stock market went up almost 50% and I believe my spending is in 6 digits.

  • About 3K to 12K. Depends on whats available that I actually like. If my wife ever found out, I'd be in trouble. image
  • I don't want to go thru and add it all up (scary thought)....but it is somewhere in the $45 to 55k range that I spent in 2003. I sold $20-25k in coins also........so it wasn't all out of pocket. I expect to buy less than 1/2 of that this year....and maybe closer to 1/4.

  • I couldn't say how much but its not nearly enough to get all the coins I need and want.
