What's your most pathetic coin in a holder ?

In the late eighties and early nineties neither PCGS nor NGC would slab a coin post 1964 unless you could prove it had value. So when the rules changed a few of us dinosaurs laughed uncontrolably when someone would show us a 1985 Lincoln cent slabbed Proof 68 or whatever.
Now we are in the year 2003.Which coins seem to be a waste of time to encapsulate ? Should all coins be slabbed ? Is the numismatic future of a 1929 Lincoln cent grading very fine 30 worth encapsulating ?

I have a cool 1964 Half dollar that was slabbed by NGC right before they posed the ban on "Late date modern" coins. It's a pop 1 slab and the only modern coin in a NGC white label slab.

Today, I say slab any coin you want if you want to pay the fee.

    Cameron,

Are you saying the slab is worth more than the coin ?

I have the most pathetic coin in a holder. I have an AU58 1999-D Roosevelt Dime. Don't even ask.
  • Options
Oh yes. The coin is a $5 coin, but the slab is easily worth $100. I traded some nice PCGS type coins for several rare slabs.

You almost nailed it when talking about my most pathetic coin in a holder. I have a VF 1929-S Lincoln that has been harshly cleaned with a pencil eraser. It resides in an ACG slab. People talk about coins not worth the slabbing cost - that one isn't worth the postage!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, and the coin looks like it spent way too much time in it.

    A very sad coin.

Braddick takes the cake for most worthless coins in holders, hands down!!!

They are not worthless. I slabbed about 1/3 of the set for him and took great care looking for low grade pieces. I still made money on them even after slabbing costs, so it goes to show there is a market in all kinds of slabbed coins.

Jeremy, I think that is a cool dime !!! That would make either a good luck pocket coin or a nice neclace for your girl [that is if she collects coins].

Braddick's SBA in "04" takes the cake, hands down.

With 66 points worth of "wear" you would hope that at least some of the ugly would have worn off...

    but nooooooooo

    truly pathetic

    I'm enjoying this set:

    http://www.pcgs.com/new_set_registry/display_coins.chtml?regsetid=16402&alltime=no

I do have some PCI slabbed coins, red holdered, with very descriptive inserts. I'll get around to photographing them and showing them off (?!)

Here's one I've got on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2202991786&category=11963&rd=1

It's just not "bad" enough to be a keeper.

I have a couple of dimes in MS63 that list for less than a standard slabbing fee.

Of course, I didn't pay said slabbing fee, someone else did, and I just bought the coins for a couple of dollars each, and they happened to be in these fancy holders.

I think I saw a VF details/net VG/corroded 1956-D Lincoln in an ANACS slab on Teletrade a while back. That one kinda makes you wonder.

Damn, Jeremy- I've said it before, but I totally love that Bust dime. Don't EVER think about cracking it- it's a classic! image
