I like the face of the lady on the Draped Bust coinage from the late 1790s and early 1800s. I'll bet she was just stunningly beautiful.

  • Depiction of Lady Liberty on the 3 cent nickel.
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?

    Whatever form she takes,
LIBERTY should be the ONLY face on our coinage. Same for paper.

You're right--I was noticing the same thing in a recent photo. My candidate for best "face" (after Lucy, of course!) is De Franciscis' lovely wife on the Peace Dollar.

Until you mentioned it, I hadn't noticed--but you're right. A very similar profile--but, then again, I believe both designers were contemporaries, or at least were working in the same era--would hate to think that St. Gaudens ripped off another artist. Both designs are very attractive--but I still prefer the Peace Dollar.

Eunice Shriver, who, by the way, was standing on the podium at Gov. Schwartzennegger's swearing on on Monday for those of you eagle-eyed people who noticed here there. She was in back standing next to the old guy who was dancing some kind of a jig with his cane up there when the ceremony ended.

A face that only a mother could love.

Second choice is the raggedy-haired Liberty on the earliest cents or half cents with the Medusa hair-- I think it was the chain pattern on the back (not my area).

No one ripped anyone off here. Saint-Gaudens designed his eagle Liberty in 1907 and he died that year. De Francisci I think briefly studied under Saint-Gaudens but he based his Peace Dollar design on a profile of his wife who was only 21 at the time De Francisci was more than ten years older than his wife.). In 1907 when Saint-Gaudens designed the Eagle she would have only been seven years old and I doubt if Saint-Gaudens ever met her.

Miss Draped Bust Liberty is my favorite, too.

And, since Cosmic brought it up, Dolley Madison is my fave on a modern.
