A little Morgan grading fun. (Grades posted)

DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
I traded this common Morgan the other day with a dealer friend, and thought you might enjoy the exercise. The black spots on the obverse are dirt, and not marks on the coin. I'll post the rest of the story later tonight.

    MS63
    It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Fields look pretty clean but some nasty scratches on the cheek bring it down to MS63. The reverse is very nice.

    Weak strike on a common year with a scrape and some good sized marks.......ms63.
    Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    I really like that reverse.

    Too many shaving cuts on the cheek to go higher than MS63

    The consensus is ms63, but i will go out on a limb and say ms64, Those big scans make everything look worse than it is.

    No dumb replies. All good answers. When I traded for this girl, I counted her $20. She was in a SEGS holder graded MS64 PQ. image I thought she needed her dignity, so I cracked her out of the Segs holder.

    Edited to add - PCGS grades posted.image

    This one and the 1883 Segs MS64 both managed an upgrade submitted raw. Both were holdered as PCGS MS65. Pics when they return home.

    Well that shows exactly what I know about Morgans. image

    I will say that the marks on the obverse are bigger than most coins I look at.....image

    Don, I would have said 64. I've seen coins just like that in everyone's holder graded 64.

    I didn't know SEGS used "PQ" on their inserts? I know PCI does.

    Wow. That first pic looks MS-63, but the second one with better lighting looks at least a 64. The marks on the cheek keep it from a 65 for me, but I guess it had enough for a 65 from PCGS.

    Pat, I think I still have the insert. I'll dig it out. The reason I picked it up out of the display case at the show was the insert. I wanted to see what the reverse looked like.

    Pat - you're right. Dark green PCI MS64-PQ.

    Well, thanks Don, we've learned quite a bit from this thread:

    1) buy the coin, not the slab;

    2) hard to grade via photo;

    3) triple or quadruple the amount Don wants to "count" your coins in trade;

    4) Braddick knows his slabs;

    some questions for you -

    do you think the coin looks okay in the 5 slab? (looks okay to me)

    do you think it would have made the 5 if the value difference between 4 and 5 was $400 and not $40? (think it would have been tougher)

    do you really think pci or segs slabs are undignified? (i love segs slabs)

    i'm going to look for a slab with a "pq" grade on it at the next show i make it to.

    Zenny,

    do you think the coin looks okay in the 5 slab? (looks okay to me)

    I originally figured it a 4, but think it got a bump for luster and color.

    Not a chance in ****. image

    Zenny, I learned from you how to cover the holder when I look.image Heck, to me they're all raw coins.

    i'm going to look for a slab with a "pq" grade on it at the next show i make it to.

    When I looked at the coin, I was selling the dealer a set of proof quarters and was just killing time while he was deciding what they were worth to him. I saw the PQ label and decided it was worth a look. I ended up trading with him, and figured the reverse color was worth $20. I hate to admit this, but it was actually nicer in the first pics because right after I took those pictures, I dropped the coin and put the mark on the center of the breast (first time ever). Never again. Even though it didn't affect the outcome, it really makes me mad at myself for damaging a coin (even an inexpensive one).

    i didn't notice it the first time around but you really did thwack that thing, didn't you? yikes, looks like you "dropped" it from about 12 feet.

    it's nice to have a "reminder" coin around. i've got a couple....

    ps. take a look over at the advanced grading thread, i'm going to try to make it back again next summer, be good to see you there!
