Hey Cameron, I have to know...

Do you collect real coins or just sample slabs?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

You guys do know that you're picking on someone who tried to do the right thing -- albeit in a slightly annoying sort of way. Any chance that you'd be willing to cut him some slack? After all, we're all imperfect!

I collect rare and valuable slab inserts. My ultimate goal is to have slab tags from a 1913 Liberty nickel, an 1804 class I dollar, an 1894-S dime, 1822 half eagle, and all of the other great rarities.

so far I have quite a nice collection of raw tags from slabs I have broken. Since the coin itself is of no importance, I usually spend it or if no one will accept an obsolete coin in payment i just throw it away.

Liberty: Parent of Science & Industry

  • The ANA has the slab tags from both 1804 dollars they cracked out and the 1913 nickel they cracked from the NGC slabs. I asked if they even saved the plastic and they said no. Good luck trying to acquire the tags, but you never know. One may be out there.

  • At the risk of sounding foolish here, just what is it that makes a slab a "sample". Samples are usually free, were these free originally?

I know about the ones done for a class at the University of Texas awhile back and I can slearly see why those were considered samples. Yes, I know it says sample on the front, duh.

Does every sample slab slab contain a coin that would otherwise be worth only face value?

I have a PCGS one with a 64 MS67 Rosevelt in it, but I bought it in a lot with other things that I actually wanted, I figured it's value to be almost nothing at the time and would have bid the same with or without it in the group.

  • I collect carboard 2x2's. The only reason I put the coins in them is to help get the inner plastic in a better viewing postion.

  • Stujoe. We are having a real conversation here about samples. No need to go and try to ruin it by bashing others collections.

Samples are given away for free and usually do have the word "sample" on the label. Mt website explains it much better:

Bingo, Russ...you hit the nail square on the head. If he's so uptight in his teens, he'll be suicidal by the time he's thirty!

Not everyone follows all the rules to the letter, and as far as I know, nobody was put upon this Earth to be the watchdog over all.

When I was going through my teens:

I drank, went to school, smoked (cigarettes), did my homework, played, laughed.

    When I went to college:

I drank, went to class, drank, smoked (still only cigarettes), drank, did my homework, drank, and graduated.

Did 20 years in the USAF where I drank, smoked (ciggies only), worked, drank, successfully raised a family, and retired

Now I'm a responsible adult and I still drink, smoke (still only cigarettes), work for a living, attend evening graduate classes, do homework.

And you know what? I STILL HAVE FUN! Cuz life was meant to enjoy.

So, loosen up Cammie me ole mucker! Have a beer, no...have a FEW beers, kick back and enjoy life!

    Cheers,

    Bob

NGC had free sample slabs at their Long Beach booth. I got one with a Missouri quarter in it.

So did I, but I cracked it out and spent the quarter. Had it been in a PCGS sample slab the coin would have been worth more than face.

FanOfModerns: I am curious, without trying to provoke you -- Why are you so much against NGC, and so antagonistic towards them?

Most would concur that NGC and PCGS both comprise the top tier of coin grading services, with ANACS probably the third place grading service.

Have you had a bad experience with NGC? Or, are you a family member or close personal friend of someone within PCGS?

    Your posts seem extremely unbalanced...

PCGS coins sell for the most so therefore they are the best graders. Anyone who says otherwise probably doesn't know what they are talking about or works for the other grading company or wants to sell overgraded coins to people.

  • If you think that PCGS isn't the best grading service then why are you here? Aren't there other forums for the other grading services?

There is a reason why PCGS coins sell for the most. They are the best.

Some people don't like my opinions because I collect moderns. I can't help that. Maybe one day I will collect what they collect and they will be happy. I do know when that time comes they will be PCGS coins only!

  • Hey FOM, I collect moderns and even I have trouble with your attitude as well. Go figure.

I have no idea how many slabbed coins I have, but it is several hundred and most of them are PCGS, feel better?

My last submission went across the street, wanna guess why?

How about 32 calendar day turnaround on economy? I was talking to a guy at one of the local stores yesterday and he was at 102 days and counting on PCGS economy.

Would I prefer to go PCGS? Usually, but the current turnaround times are totally unacceptable. If you refuse to even look at a coin in another slab, you will miss out on some nice stuff. Somehow I'm guessing that went right over your head.

I like this forum and the people around here, well, nearly all of them anyway.

Ease up, guy. Life's too short to go around with blinders on.

Unfortunately, most cops think they were put on this earth to be the watchdog over all, and as a wannabe cop, Cameron fits this M.O. quite well, there is NO gray area with cops, it is either right or wrong, PERIOD. He will either outgrow this as time goes on, (hopefully) or he will advance to kicking down doors of people using bongs (GASP) in the privacy of their own homes and traumatizing their children for life. In the meantime, I think he handles himself quite well and takes the ribbing (albeit self-induced) quite well.

Drop the attitude. It's getting old.

Many are here for the fun of the hobby.

Who in the L cares about the slab.

Sure PCGS is a great company but not the only one.

  • Cameron,

I used to enjoy your threads and your hunger for numismatics. But as of late, your posts seem to be written from a spoiled child's point of view. Seems you want to win at all costs, even when there is nothing to win.

You have been very good at becoming the board policeman, and trying to shove people, decades your senior, around. When I was a young lad, many years ago, my Mom taught me an adage that went " Children should be seen, but never heard" when in a crowd.

An old uncle of mine from Kentucky, taught me that "a fish that never opens it mouth, never gets caught".

Young man, in my very humble opinion, you should re evaluate your status and importance on this board, and try to regain some of it.

Personally, I could care less what you do. I just hate to see the early talent that you expressed when you first came on board, to evaporate at the rate it is. I am sure that you are a great KID, with wild aspirations of becoming a Homerunhall type.

Just lighten up, a simple apology to the board or softer words in your threads should help you immensely. I in no means express my opinion of you, as a personal attack. You have so much to offer. Please try to reevaluate and share good stuff with us. There are enough adults on this board, to be mean spirited.

Take this thread with a grain of salt if you will. I am no more important on this board than any other member/poster.
