Jerkoff dealer..... I'm really pissed..... (long)

I asked nicely that forum members keep to themselves about the dealer involved. My post was to "vent", not linch a company no matter what their past is.

I wouldn't want to have that happen to me

My local dealer asks me every time I'm in there for a want list. I don't "want" to be obligated!

1. It helps the many collectors here avoid the dealer.
2. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
I advise this course of action even though I am really torn by this. However, I think that no legitimate dealer should be using that kind of language to a retail customer simply because the customer wanted to return the coins. Even if you used aggressive language on him first -- which I assume you did not -- that would still not excuse the dealer. The dealer should never act unprofessionally.
Assume worse case that you wronged him. Then, he just accept the coins back and sell them to someone else. If he's trying to dump slop on you, then shame on him. If he bought right, then he can just stuff the coins in his inventory and sell them to another retail customer. Still, he should swallow the lost deal as a normal part of dealing with the retail customer base.
Assume that he wronged you. Then, you have some sort of moral obligation to warn others of this blight on our hobby. Doing so is not necessarily stooping to his level. It's only *how* you handle the issue that may or may not be inappropriate. But, I also advise you that you try to handle this going forward as dispassionately and forthrightly as possible.

Frequently, I see dealers at shows buying coins specifically for a customer only *after* calling the customer -- we all have cell phones these days -- and getting the explicit go-ahead from the customer.
IMO, if a dealer buys right and buys the cool coins, then he need not target specific customers.

Not all of us. Call me at work, or don't call me at all. Hell, I wouldn't even have a home phone if I didn't need it for the alarm company and the police department.

At the same, I would never have a dealer buy a lot of stuff for me site unseen unless I had worked with them before or had a very good idea about what was in their inventory and whether we had similar tastes or not.
It's not that dealers acting as agents are trying to screw you, it's just that particular dealers and collectors may have widely varying standards of collectibility. Also, it could be that the dealer wasn't even making that much on the deal.
I agree giving your wife a hard time is totally unacceptable. That alone is enough to scratch this guy off my "do not do business with under any circumstances" list.

I spend alot of time in the wilderness and I can assure you that this guy was not raised there. You will find that virtually everyone in the wilderness treats each other with great respect, are well mannered, and will lend a hand to each other without a request.
This dealer was raised in a coin dealer den and his species is found at all coin shows and is also found in mass on eBay.
Obviously, your dealer friend doesn't seem to understand the nature of this business, & lit ooks like he just lost a customer.
I would take a very educated guess that it's not Pinnacle, Legend or Heritage, all of whom will send coins to their custmers on approval, with a very fair return privilege - All good companies to deal with IMO.
But, I agree,if you're going to bring this up, you might want to let the forum members know who not to do business with. I know after reading Claus' experience with the dealer who sold him the MS70 PCGS coin that suddenly has no return privilege, that I would not even consider biddin gonany item he has for sale.

Question: Did the two of you ever sit down, face to face (reviewing some representative examples) and discuss what look of coin you wanted?
Comments:
Rarely, do we go out and buy a want list item specifically for a client, without KNOWING what he is looking for. Effective communication between the client and dealer is vital.
If we have doubts, we will attempt to get the coin on consignment basis, so that we can allow the client to view it on a sight-seen basis. If that is not possible, we will call the client from a show, let him know about the coin's qualities, appearance, etc., and see if he wants to give the go-ahead.
We do have a few clients who have instructed us along the lines of "if you see the coin and think it's ok, buy it for me".
The large majority of our want lists are filled when we acquire coins that we would gladly buy, whether we had a want list on file or not, and, which we offer to want list clients after we acquire them.
These practices usually make for happy clients who do not end up with coins they didn't want and who don't end up paying extra for a coin, merely because it happened to have been on a want list.
Obviously, regardless of what went wrong between you and the dealer, his behavior on the phone was unacceptable, to say the least. Sorry to hear that.
I can promise you it wasn't Legend. I just get cranky, not stupid! So does that mean its one of the other two then that Mr. Eureka mentioned???
I never have understood why some dealers have to try and take advantage of people who come to them to do business.
JUST SAY NO TO WANNABES! They lurk and prey on unwitting collectors in chatrooms!

PM me so I never buy from this person
Seriously, I'd both post his name and send him a link so he can defend himself....if he can and cares to do so.
The problem with not mentioning his name is that some forum members will assume it's a certain individual and may be making a bad assumption.
Just my 2 cents.
