Heritage Long Beach Auction Wins!

Just got back from a two day hike on sections 1 & 2 of the Bartram Trail in North Georgia (a glorious weekend for a walk in the woods) and just found out that I won three commems in the Saturday Morning Session of the Heritage Auction. Somewhat surprised as I placed 10 conservative to moderate bids and with the so called hot market didn't expect to win. Interesting that all but two of the bids were won by the internet pre auction bids. Another was won by an eBayer leaving just one winner from the auction floor. Just curious, was the attendance at this auction session low due to the flood I just read about?

Here's the line-up

  • I was at that session on Saturday and it was very well attended and included a number of extremely strong buyers who were willing to reach for the "right" coins. By that I mean coins with exceptional eye appeal -- you know, the ones with gorgeous color, extraordinary luster, etc. -- the real premium quality pieces. A PCGS MS68 Antietam sold for $23,000 plus the juice; a glorious PCGS MS67 1936-D Arkansas realized $20,000 plus the buyers fee while the previous lot (another PCGS MS67 1936-D Arkansas) went for peanuts; a PCGS MS66 Delaware that I was in the bidding up to $2,000 -- fetched $2,700 plus the vig (Greysheet MS66 bid is $550) and the list could go on and on. Suffice it to say, the real cool stuff bought big bucks while the average material languished and sold quite cheaply. There's a definite two tier market out there...one of them HOT and one of them NOT!

Very nice coins. The Gettysburg is a neat design. There were some bargains to be had. The only lot I won was also a conservative bid that I place through the internet at least 2 weeks before the auction.

Fats, those are great looking coins. If I didn't already have them in my set I would love to have the GBurg and the Vermont(yours look nicer than mine). I concentrated on picking up a Columbia because it was the last coin I needed for the 50 piece set----------BigE

Mike, you hit the nail on the head with your comment

on the two tier toned commem market. The top grades, in the top color, sell for

multiples of the prices that coins of avarage grade and color. It seems to me that

the top end has a long way to go and is not reflected at all in Gray Sheet.

Probably the same situation exists with type coins, again not reflected by

Gray Sheet. It makes it even more important to deal with a reputable and

knowledgable dealer in which class I consider you an outstanding member.

My favorite is the Gettysburg the the toned Vermont. How many more to go?

  • Silver coins that are not "rainbow monsta's" can still be had at affordable prices. If you don't need the picaso color you can still find bargins.
