MY BEST LOW POP. MS67 PQ S.L.10C NO RESERVE NO BIDS?

I am auctioning all of my coins, with no reserves, at L.B. Heritage auction due to personal & financial reasons. This is my first & last major consignment. I just can't understand why the most outstanding coin in my collection has not had $1 bid on it yet. This coin was sold to me as MS69 by Heritage Auctions (in 1985 Pre-PCGS) and later Graded MS67 By PCGS. I always knew it was not MS69 but I still think it is a MS68! Can someone on this forum give me an opinion as to why a fresh pristine coin hasn't received one bid yet? Should I put a reserve price on it. Regards, Mapmaker.

Many folks want to see the coin in person. Many folks want to bid on it in person. MS-67 is a very high grade, in fact, so high that they are afraid of the grade as they can't afford it. I would love to own it, but it will be too expensive for me.

MapMaker: Looks like you have two bids and it is up to $260.

This is still a little early for the Heritage auctions to draw much in bids. The action normally builds up with 3-4 before the end of internet bidding.

This coin will probably sell for between $2200 to $3500.

While putting auction links on this board will guarantee that I won't bid on any of your coins, the fact there is live bidding will pretty much ensure they go for what they should go for.

  • A few years ago on Ebay, 2 PCGS FS nickels (1962 and 1956) were up in a
10 day auction. I was the high bidder for over 7 consecutive days. I ended
up being out bid in the end. My 2 bids were reasonable. I learned my lesson.
Why bother bidding days and days before the auction ends?
  • You have 10 days to go and have a beautiful coin up--relax--I think you'll do well.

Relax, you've got 10 days to go. The current prices on all the lots are menaingless. I agree your coin may be undergraded. It is gorgeous and will bring a very strong price.

    Mapmaker,

if it makes you feel better I'll toss in a $2200 bid right now but I know it won't take the coin. It will realize its full price on the floor.
It looks like a great piece.

I'll wager it goes for $3500-3900 just as a solid 67. If any of the cracker boys are thinking NGC 68, you can toss out any price.

For what reason will you not bid on those coins?

It would make me feel a lot better if you placed a $2200 bid on it only if you really wanted it at that price. I am sure you fellows are right about relaxing but I am new at auctioning these kind of coins. This coin is a real "screamer" and this is how a report in the Greysheet (No Bluesheet yet then)described it in 1985: Ex: Summer 1985 Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 6/1985), lot 905, where it brought an amazing $3,190, the highest price of the six lots of 1884 dimes that were offered in that sale from an original roll.
Thanks for the encouragement to all who have replied so far. I feel less nervous about it now.
    Regards, MapMaker.

    Mapmaker,

Be assured, I only place bids on coins I want to own....just like everyone else here.

Many people don't bid until the last week before the auction.
They like to think about it and not commit the money that far in advance incase they find something else they want before then.
  • Relax is right. These are nice appealing looking coins and will have zero problem finding a decent home at a decent price. As a matter of fact one is on my tracking list to view when I get to LB. True players look before biddin on these high end numbers.

On a different note I feel it is important to point out how easy it is to NOT make money in coins.... Not to pick on your coin but it is to illustrate a point.

The 1858 25C MS65 PCGS last went for $2,300 on 5/3/03 and according to Heritage:
Ex: Fall 1988 Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 9/1988), lot 506, which realized $2,090

So it appreciated $210 in almost 15 years or .66% per year [less than 1%]. Collectors do not make money like this, auction houses get it one way or the other. Mind you, this is a super nice coin with very low , 28/8 , pops and still was a lousy "investment".

Wow! Those coins are absolutely amazing! I would bid, but I don't stand a chance of owning those coins, they're way out of my price range!

OHBABY, WHAT HERITAGE DIDN"T TELL YOU: The coin was graded too conservativly at MS64 when it sold at $2090.00 I sent it in for re-grade and it correctly graded at MS65! It should bring at least $4000.00! It represents a good investment now for someone at this level.
    Thanks for your interest, Mapmaker.

I'm sure I speak for many people when I say you should be patient. Like many serious bidders, I never bid until the last day. I'm sure you'll be happy with the final price.

Mapmaker: I am not sure that this forum had anything to do with the bidding on that 1884 dime. Last night was Sunday night and usually the bidders come out of hiding to play with coins when the spouses and/or kids leave them alone for a few minutes!!! image

I have one of these already in PCGS MS-67 and in fact, was in one of B&M's and or Kingswood (I forget) auctions several years ago. It went REALLY cheap since it was a average to slightly below average MS-67.

    Oh baby,

MS65 no motto quarters were bringing $12-15K in mid 1989. If you were lucky enough to put away a few gems in 1982-1984 for $2500 apiece, you'd have done superbly. But you do have to sell sometime if you consider this an investment.

After checking other coins in Heritage Auction similar to mine I find they have very few bids. I am absolutly sure at least 80 -90% of my bids came from this forum's members! Some even acknowledged it on threads! I beleive that this forum has more real numismatists, with bidding bucks to back them, than any other board.
AGAIN I THANK YOU ONE AND ALL! MapMaker.

Mapmaker, a post on this forum with a link will increase bids for any coin auction but it is against the rules here to post items of your own that are for sale. If it was allowed here all it would be was one big ad. mike
    • with Darktone - put it on the BST board

My question is why then do you have two Links on your post? One to your web site and one to your auction.
Is this not to do business? I am not trying to be a wise guy. I am not an old timer on this board and my question is serious. Please enlighten me as why you can link and I am not allowed to?
      Respectfully, MapMaker.

It is accepted to put a link in your signature line but not to start threads with auction or for sale stuff- If it was not against the rules don't you think everybody would be doing it? I know your new here so this is no big deal- just trying to give a heads up to the new people. mike image

      • Darktone???

I must have missed something. Is an auction item a coin for sale? Isn't this called the Buy, Sale or Trade board (BST). If so I think there is nothing wrong with the post.

There are no published "rules" that I know of except that you should start a thread with For Sale or For Auction so anyone can pass over threads that do not interest them.
